If you want to, you can mail to your list the following statements about Duke: Let me summarize my impressions about allegations made against David Duke after I met him at his recent conference: a) False Tax Return: in 1998, Duke's offices were raided and all paperwork confiscated during seven audits on his tax returns and campaign financing of earlier years. These audits did not find anything wrong. However, due to the confiscated paper work, Duke could not file a complete tax return for 1998 in early 1999. He stated this in a letter sent to the IRS together with his tax return (for some $19,000), but got indicted for this false return anyway, because he allegedly had a gross income of some $65,000, as the prosecution stated (I have a copy of this indictment). He was sentenced subsequently without trial, because he did not want to risk being judged and sentenced by a mainly black jury. In August 2003, while he was in prison, he received a $6,000+ refund from the IRS for the tax year 1998 for OVERPAID TAXES!!! I HAVE copies of the IRS documents for this!!! (Refund notice and checks issued.) This proves beyond any doubt that the whole case was absurd. b) Gambling: The quotation in the media of an alleged statement of Duke's lawyer admitting that Duke gambled away supporter money is FALSE. It is the prosecutor who is quoted there, which was wrongly assigned to Duke's lawyer. I have personally seen a written statement by his lawyer which states that he believes that Duke did NOT use any supporter money for gambling. Apart from that, the indictment against Duke for alleged mail fraud is equally absurd, as it a) did not even try to back up its utterly unspecific claims with any evidence, and b) it admits that Duke had to sell his house in order to prevent financial difficulties, which proves that Duke's claim during his personal fund raising campaign (danger of loss of his house due to legal coast incured as a result of above mentioned seven audits) were CORRECT!!! And last but not least: The indictment for an alleged false tax return shows that even in the eyes of the prosecution, Duke had not more than $65,000 gross income that year (which was wrong, of course, as proven by the IRS's refund, indicating a much lower income). Hence, even if his lawyer was wrong, Duke cannot have gambled away much supporter money, because his gross income during those years did not even reach the average household income in the US. So, let's assume he used some of the money that can be considered his gross income during those years. What is criminal about a poor man using some of his little income to gamble? I sure do not approve of anybody gambling, but that is not a legal issue. Duke admits that he gambled on a small scale, but he said he used only small amounts of his small personal income for that. He understands now that it was not wise to gamble, and claims that he subsequently never entered a casino again, and he promised this also for the future. He claims to have used a system which enabled him to actually win money, but knowing about the impossibility to trick statistics, I have my doubts in this regard. c) Any claims about alleged plans of David Duke to create a new all-comprehensive organization, of which he would be a leader receiving considerable amounts of money, are absolutely unfounded. Neither has there ever been a discussion to establish any kind of new organization nor would anybody -- Duke or other individuals -- receive any money from anything. The above is a recollection of my long talks with Duke, his associates, tax professionals, and my reviewing his documentation. It might not be 100% accurate, but it certainly gives an accurate general picture. What ever one may think of David Duke as an individual and a leader, everybody should be aware of the fact that a) media and courts are almost never truthful about any personality considered right-wing and b) that many agents provocateurs and jealous people intentionally invent and spread false rumors in an attempt to destroy from within. White supremacy seems more an American construct, and perhaps justified at a certain time and place, as per the original KKK as a guerrilla army against occupiers. The flags have been packed away for the Fourth of July. The memory of the Second World War, our Second World War, has been honored -- so now perhaps it's worth taking a moment to honor someone else's. An opportunity to do so will present itself this Sunday, when CNN broadcasts an unusual documentary called "Warsaw Rising." The timing of the broadcast is deliberate: the week after the dedication of the National World War II Memorial, the 60th anniversary of D-Day and -- soon -- the 60th anniversary of the Warsaw uprising itself, which began on Aug. 1. As CNN puts it, here's a chance to listen while "the survivors of this little-known tragedy of the war finally tell their story." Of course, the Warsaw uprising isn't as little known as all that: Survivors in Poland have been telling their stories for quite some time. But it is true that the story is little known in this country, and there are reasons for that: It wasn't a story our political leaders wanted to dwell on at the time, and it hasn't been one anyone in this wanted to talk much about since. Among other things, if we really absorbed its lessons, it would be difficult for Americans to feel quite so sentimental about World War II, and quite so nostalgic about the unshakable moral purpose for which it was supposedly fought. For the story of the Warsaw uprising really is the story of the destruction of Poland's "greatest generation." The uprising began when the leaders of Warsaw's underground army launched a rebellion against the Nazis who had brutally occupied their city for nearly five years. Hearing the Soviet Red Army guns to the East, knowing of D-Day and the American entry into the European war, they assumed the fighting would last just a few days, until the Allies joined and the city was freed. "We believed so much in the West," one of the survivors wistfully told CNN. But their assumption was incorrect. Stalin not only refused to send Red Army troops to help what he described as a "band of criminals," he also refused to allow British and American planes to refuel in the Soviet Union, making airlifts impossible. Neither the British prime minister, Winston Churchill, nor the American president, Franklin Roosevelt, thought it important enough to pressure the Soviet dictator. With the exception of one airlift, the planes never came. The Poles were left to fight alone. In the battle, which lasted 63 days, more than 200,000 people died, among them most of the country's intellectual and leadership. The scale of the catastrophe, the psychological, physical and economic damage, is almost unimaginable. Original underground army footage, obtained by CNN reporter David Ensor, shows vast stretches of central Warsaw reduced to rubble, people living in ruins, teenagers building barricades out of the remains of homes. As Norman Davies, the historian of the rising, points out, more civilians died every day for those 63 days than died on Sept. 11. Others escaped through the sewer system, walking 20 hours through raw human waste. When the Red army did finally "liberate" Warsaw the following winter, there was almost nothing left. Soviet secret police officers rounded up and arrested the remaining underground leaders, on the grounds that anyone brave enough to fight Germans would probably fight against the Soviet Union too. Again, Roosevelt and Churchill did not object: They had already consigned Poland to the Soviet "sphere of influence" during their conference with Stalin at Yalta, and had washed their hands of the country's fate. For those tempted by the post-Vietnam nostalgia for the "good war" -- a nostalgia which seems to increase as things go badly in Iraq -- it's an unsettling story. But there are many such stories. No less terrible are the tales of the Allied troops who forced White Russians and Cossacks into trucks and returned them to the Soviet Union -- at Stalin's request -- where most were killed. Or the accounts of the mass arrests that accompanied the Soviet "liberation" of Central Europe, while we in the West officially looked away. One of the reasons the survivors in CNN's film speak such beautiful English is that they were all exiles, forced to live abroad after the war. In fact, for millions of people, World War II had no happy ending. It had no ending at all. The liberation of one half of the European continent coincided with a new occupation for the other half. The camps of Stalin, our ally, expanded just as the camps of Hitler, our enemy, were destroyed. Not that you would know it, listening to Americans reminisce about D-Day, or the children welcoming GIs in the streets, or the joyous return home. Perhaps there is no such thing as an entirely "good war" after all. Nearly everyone has seen countless films, historical documentaries and tear-jerking testimonies of concentration-camp atrocities. Today, many students are taught about it in school - some as early as kindergarten - and if you are fortunate to live near Washington, D.C., you can expect field trips to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. One really can't go anywhere without being reminded of The Holocaust. For example, my wife and I, on a trip to Baltimore, happened upon a memorial where the images of Jewish victims were entwined into a sphere that resembled the Earth, their faces grimacing in agonizing pain. The message: worldwide Jewish suffering. On a recent trip to Boston, we encountered another memorial located in a park at the center of the tourist district, but this one was far more sensational than the last. Here, we discovered a glass monument where passersby could stroll through and read the names of Jewish Holocaust victims while simultaneously being subjected to a misty gas-like substance pouring into the glass enclosure. The message: Jews died by gas chambers. At both memorials, I wondered to myself, "Why are these things here?" Really, why are Jews specifically given countless remembrances - not to mention a national Holocaust Remembrance Day - whose sole purpose is to remind the world of Jewish suffering? Members of all ethnicities and religions have suffered tragically at one point in time or another. The Japanese living in Hiroshima and Nagasaki were consumed in an atomic firestorm - man, woman and child. In Germany, 130,000 innocent civilians died in an Allied firebombing campaign in one night leveling the entire city. The invasion of China by Japan in 1938 produced what is now known as "The Rape of Nanking," where 369,000 Chinese were beheaded, disemboweled or burned alive. The Communists murdered 25,000 Poles - execution style - in Katyn, Poland. Yet these events and others do not receive comparable attention or anything demonstrably close to the media campaign towards Jewish suffering in the Holocaust. The supply of movies, books, documentaries, educational materials, museums, memorials, etc. is endless. Yehuda Bauer, Jewish professor and historian at Hebrew University in Jerusalem noted: "Whether presented authentically or in authentically, in accordance with the historical facts or in contradiction to them ... the Holocaust has become a ruling symbol of our culture ... Hardly a month goes by without a new TV production, a new film, a new drama, new books, prose or poetry dealing with the subject, and the flood is increasing rather than abating." Most importantly, Bauer acknowledges the irrelevancy of the factual or inaccurate presentation of Holocaust material. Instead, the flood of information has transformed an at-times misrepresented historical event into a religious and social dogma. The Holocaust does not drive itself, rather is steered and guided by political and media forces. This campaign for universal awareness of intense Jewish suffering has resulted in special political considerations and financial rewards for Israel. According to the Washington Report on the Middle East, since 1949 Israel has received $84.85 billion dollars in U.S. aid and yearly receives one-third of all U.S. aid to foreign countries. The total cost to U.S. taxpayers is a staggering $134 billion dollars. But the U.S. is not alone in its handsome payouts to the Israeli government and other Jewish groups. Germany, for example, has paid $40 billion dollars in reparations payments, and Switzerland $1.25 billion. Jewish professor Norman Finkelstein detailed in his book, The Holocaust Industry, that Israel and organized Jewry have used the event to "extort billions of dollars." And he predicts that the industry "may yet turn out to be the 'greatest robbery in the history of mankind.' " Interestingly, Finkelstein remarked that Holocaust promotion is also an effective hammer in silencing and condemning all criticism of Israel and Jewry, thereby preventing the questioning and investigation of current or historical events. "Organized Jewry has exploited the Nazi holocaust to deflect criticism of Israel's and its own morally indefensible policies." On a similar note, South African Bishop Desmund Tutu observed that because of the "pedestal" the Israeli government is placed on in the United States, "to criticize it is to be labeled anti-Semitic." The extortion of funds, whether in the form of U.S. foreign aid or reparations payments, isn't possible unless organized Jewry is a powerful force in government and media. Exclusively Jewish perspectives are presented through effective media ownership resulting in unwavering support for the Israeli government and social sensitivity for Jewish interests. This type of influential power was commented on by two prominent Jewish writers, Seymour Lipset and Earl Raab, in their book Jews and the New American Scene. "During the last three decades, Jews (in the United States) have made up 50 percent of the top two hundred intellectuals ... 20 percent of professors at the leading universities ... 40 percent of partners in the leading law firms in New York and Washington ... 59 percent of the directors, writers and producers of the 50 top-grossing motion pictures from 1965 to 1982, and 58 percent of directors, writers and producers in two or more primetime television series." However, Stephen Steinlight of the National Affairs of the American Jewish Committee commented that Jewish power is extremely disproportionate in media, notably television, news and Hollywood. With effective ownership of the media, a specifically Jewish perspective of popular culture is painted. This media power is able to promote what it wants, when it wants and how it wants, but more importantly, what the audience sees and doesn't see. Jewish author and film critic Michael Medved stated, "It makes no sense at all to try to deny the reality of Jewish power and prominence in popular culture. Any list of the most influential production executives at each of the major movie studios will produce a heavy majority of recognizably Jewish names." Jonathon Goldberg, editor of the Jewish weekly Forward, confirmed, "In a few key sectors of the media, notably among Hollywood studio executives, Jews are so numerically dominant that calling these businesses Jewish-controlled is little more than a statistical observation ... Virtually all the senior executives at the major studios are Jews. Writers, producers, and to a lesser degree directors are disproportionately Jewish - one recent study showed the figure as high as 59 percent among top-grossing films. The combined weight of so many Jews in one of America's most lucrative and important industries gives the Jews of Hollywood a great deal of political power." However, Jewish media dominance expands beyond the Holocaust industry into an equally distorted view of Middle East affairs. A recent report shows that American media coverage of victimization in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is remarkably pro-Israel. For example, in a crisis that has resulted in far more Palestinian casualties, 70 percent of Israeli deaths receive American press coverage as compared to 3.6 percent of Palestinian deaths. Political power is achieved through the manufacturing of opinions and ideas. Worldviews, ideologies, philosophies, thoughts and feelings can be easily manipulated through control of the press. But those same manufactured views are turned into votes for political candidates, and many politicians and political insiders understand this. Undeniably, former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Admiral Thomas Moore, courageously expressed his personal and shocking experience with Jewish power in Washington when he publicly proclaimed, "I've never seen a president - I don't care who he is - stand up to them (the Israelis). It just boggles the mind. They always get what they want. The Israelis know what is going on all the time. I got to the point where I wasn't writing anything down. If the American people understood what a grip those people have got on our government, they would rise up in arms. Our citizens certainly don't have any idea what goes on."
