The heavens are open

It's 2 a.m. at the cemetery on the edge of Netivot, and an orange light is rising from the crowd of more than 1,000 people. The sharp smell of burning candles is heavy in the air. The closer you get to the source of the light, the hotter you feel.

 Finally you see it - a blazing furnace with three-meter-high flames, spurting wax - the wax of what the emcee says are the 6,000 boxes of candles (120,000 candles in all) that Rabbi Ya'acov Yisrael Ifergan, known as "The X-Ray," is tossing into the furnace. The candles are offerings to the tzaddikim, or sages, so that they might intercede with God and answer the prayers of all those present. [Monotheists? Huh huh! ]

The action has been going on for four hours beneath the majestic mausoleum Ifergan built for his Moroccan-born father, Shalom Ifergan. The prayer meeting earlier this year marking the 10th anniversary of "Baba" Shalom's death drew some 20,000 attendees.

On this night, an honorary relay team is feeding Ifergan box after box of candles, which he flips into the furnace, aiming at the funnel, hitting the funnel time after time like in a video game. The emcee, David Tsarfati, is pumping up the crowd, which is clapping, singing and swooning before the heat and the music and the silent, seeming ecstasy of Ifergan's efforts.

 "Because of the rabbi's efforts, the heavens are open, the tzaddikim are receiving our prayers!" Tsarfati shouts.

 There are men in wheelchairs at the front of the crowd. Women are weeping, praying for a cure, for a baby, for a husband. When Ifergan is driven up to the site - he came straight from the bar mitzva in Tiberias of Binyamin Netanyahu's son, Yair - he goes to takes his place in the fenced-off square in front of the furnace like the heavyweight champion entering the ring.

 "Welcome our teacher, the honorable Rabbi Ya'acov Yisrael Ifergan!" cries Tsarfati as The X-Ray makes his way slowly to the small square, his handlers keeping the crowd from swarming all over him, as he gives his hand out to be kissed, and places his hands on people's heads and mumbles blessings.

This is a tikun hatzot - a midnight revival meeting - and it is the main event of popular Kabbala in Israel. Ifergan is widely considered the most popular, most feverishly idolized kabbalist in Israel. His tikun of the 120,000 candles took place a few days before Rosh Hashana and the arrival in Israel of the most well-known Kabbala practitioner in the world, Madonna.

It's safe to assume that Madonna, who follows the ecumenical, New Age-style Kabbala of Rabbi Philip Berg's Kabbalah Centre, knew nothing of The X-Ray and the ways of day-to-day Kabbala in Israel. If most Israelis have heard the names of The X-Ray, and the Baba Sali, and the term tikun hatzot, few outside of poor, largely Mizrahi urban neighborhoods and development towns like Netivot know much more than that.

 "The popularity of Kabbala has been growing in Israel, especially among Mizrahim, and it comes from the Kabbala practiced in North Africa," says Dr. Boaz Huss of Ben-Gurion University's Goren-Goldstein Department of Jewish Thought. [A Department exists! But the Jewish Tought? ]

 "This is Kabbala that focuses on the power of the tzaddik. It involves worship at the graves of the tzaddikim. The belief is based less on theories, and more on the power of the tzaddik and what you can get from his blessing. It offers a solution to problems, to personal distress. People get an amulet from Rabbi [Yitzhak] Kadourie, who is from Iraq, or go to The X-Ray's tikun, to get pregnant, to get married, to get healed, to find a way to make a living."

Also in Netivot's cemetery, not far from Baba Shalom's mausoleum, is the much larger and more elaborate tomb of the most famous of Israel's modern tzaddikim, the Moroccan-born Rabbi Yisrael Abuhatzeira - Baba Sali - who was buried there in 1984. On the night of Ifergan's tikun, busloads of visitors pay their respects at Baba Sali's tomb. Women pray with eyes shut at his casket, sign their names on the "prayer for betrothal" posted on a wall, while men sit at long tables outside singing religious songs with abandon, drinking wine and waiting for the barbecue.

In Moroccan-style Kabbala, the power is passed from generation to generation; dynasties are formed, none so revered as the Abuhatzeira dynasty. Baba Sali's son, Baba Baruch, an ex-convict, has become a popular kabbalist in his own right in Netivot. Another member of the clan, Rabbi David Abuhatzeira, attracts a large following to his headquarters in Nahariya. The Pinto dynasty is another major Kabbala dynasty from Morocco, carried on here by Rabbi Yeshayahu Pinto in Ashdod.

Just as Shas started out among the Mizrahi poor but became so popular and influential that soon the rich and powerful came calling, so it is with Israel's kabbalists. It's perfectly in keeping with Ifergan's status that he should have been a guest at Yair Netanyahu's bar mitzva.

The hagiographic book Harentgen ("The X-Ray"), by Zvi Alloush, features photos of him with Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, President Moshe Katsav and former president Ezer Weizman, among other politicians; Knesset Speaker Reuven Rivlin, shown kissing Ifergan, is mentioned as a "regular visitor." Industrialist Nochi Dankner is also part of The X-Ray's VIP circle. (Paroled murderer Shmaya Angel is also shown receiving The X-Ray's blessing.) Players and owners of Israeli soccer teams visit The X-Ray and other kabbalists for blessings and advice.

Money is a major motif around the populist kabbalists. At the tikun of the 120,000 candles, Tsarfati, who has been with The X-Ray for about a decade, auctions off framed pictures of Baba Shalom for 1,800 shekels. (5,5 shekel = 1 euro, approx.)

"It's gold-plated, 24-carat, truly a work of art par excellence," he says.

At the kiosk, bottles of Arak and oil and boxes of candles that have been blessed by The X-Ray are on sale. "This oil was found in Baba Shalom's house, it was there for 30 years," says the vendor. A bottle costs 18 shekel. "But the money's for charity," he adds. Tsarfati tells the crowd that the proceeds from the auction will go to help impoverished families. At the same time, though, the shrine of Baba Shalom looks like it cost a pretty penny.

Ifergan's draw is his reputation as a miracle worker. Mali Elankri, a Bible teacher from Ramat Gan who is trying to catch one of the hundreds of candles The X-Ray is tossing into the crowd, says she had heard a story of a crippled boy who'd stood up in a wheelchair after receiving the kabbalist's blessing.

"I'm here to pray for a husband for my daughter, and for my son who is in the army," says Elankri. An old man carrying a plastic bag full of metal amulets with holy inscriptions comes up to an Ethiopian Jew, Danny Tal, places his hand on Tal's head and intones, "For good health, for a good livelihood, for your whole family, amen." Tal hands over 20 shekel.

"Is one enough?" the man persists. Tal nods yes, and the vendor moves on.

"I've been sick for three years. I'm going to try this. It's good for the soul," he says. Four hours later, as Ifergan prays over young men in wheelchairs and most of the crowd is headed to the parking lot, Tal is smiling. "I feel good," he says.

A 50-year-old blind man wearing sunglasses, David Ben-Yair of Petah Tikva, walks out of the tikun on the arm of his wife, Shoshana. "They say he's The X-Ray, that he can see what's wrong with you and how to cure it, so we came," explains Shoshana. "We gave him a letter telling my husband's story. I hope he reads [it] and will let us come meet him, so he'll talk to us."

 Asked what all the candles and prayers have done for him, David replies, "It didn't do anything for me."

The low point of Ifergan's appearance is his sermon. The crowd seems distracted. Pacing back and forth in front of the furnace, Ifergan strings together messages and anecdotes without giving them any shape.

"You don't have to be a great tzaddik, you can be at the lowest point, as soon as you shine a little light, everyone will see it... I meet people who go to India, to the sitra achra [the universe's dark side] to meet a guru... In Gush Katif, in Neveh Dekalim a Kassam fell, but the Blessed Holy One made a miracle, and the children were out in the yard studying Torah, and the building was destroyed but no one was hurt," he says.

But as he is firing candles into the furnace, he has a truly ecstatic expression on his face. His aim seems miraculous. He lingers close to the blaze, exposing himself to ungodly heat. He is drenched in sweat, and attendants cool him off with wet towels. In the press of the crowd, everybody is hot and sweaty; The X-Ray takes a drink of water from a cup and throws the rest over the crowd; once he threw it in the face of a man who came up to kiss his hand. The man was dripping but grateful.

Ifergan does his spiritual x-rays in his modest headquarters on Rehov Yerushalayim, Netivot's main drag. In the lobby, the atmosphere is like that of a hospital waiting room. Several anxious young women and a few gray-haired men have appointments.

"It's free, but you can donate however much you want," says one of the women. Petitioners typically write out their request on a piece of paper; some bring photos of their family members for the rabbi to bless. A boisterous delegation from Latin America with video cameras is there; an aide to Ifergan says they are "bankers" on a High Holy Day tour to meet with various rabbis.

The lobby is dominated by a large photo of Baba Shalom, and so is Ifergan's office. On his desk are a cup of coffee and a tray of apples and honey - both festooned with Israeli and American currency left by visitors. Sitting behind his desk stacked with heavily-bound religious books, his telephone and cellphones ringing constantly, Ifergan, wearing a white kipa under a black hat, is asked by a visitor if he's ever heard of Madonna. The serene-mannered kabbalist's eyes widen, he smiles faintly, and shakes his head no.

 Kabbala, Israeli style

Popular Kabbala didn't really catch on with the public in modern Israel until the 1980s, and its rise since then is "part of the challenge to what used to be the hegemony here of the Ashkenazi, secular, socialist, rationalist way of thinking," according to Dr. Boaz Huss of the Goren-Goldstein Department of Jewish Studies at Ben-Gurion University.

"As soon as you despair of the doctor being able to solve all your health problems, the door is opened for someone like 'The X-Ray.' [See story] As soon as you realize that the university and even Stephen Hawking cannot explain all the secrets of the universe, you may turn to Yehuda Ashlag [forefather of the Kabbalah Centre]. And as soon as you decide that Zionism cannot redeem the Jewish people and bring on the Messiah, you might be led in the direction of Yitzhak Ginsburg [originator of a Kach-style Kabbala]," says Huss.

The New Age-style Kabbalah Centre is popular in Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, Tiberias and Haifa for about the same reasons it is in Los Angeles, New York, London and various other Western capitals. It appeals to "seekers," usually from worldly, middle-class backgrounds who are drawn to the exotic and mystical. In the case of the Israeli Kabbalah Centre followers, these are the people known as the "Goa types." But there are Israeli schools of Kabbala whose popularity, while owing partly to the general, contemporary Western search for the exotic, is also rooted in the national life of this country.

One clear example is the Gal Einai (My eyes reveal) movement led by American-born Ginsburg, who has been investigated repeatedly for incitement to racist, anti-Arab violence. Ginsburg, identified with the Od Yosef Hai yeshiva in Nablus, teaches his followers that "Kabbala proves the supremacy of the Jews," says Huss.

The Bnei Baruch Kabbala movement centered in Bnei Brak (with branches overseas) is especially popular with Russian immigrants. Led by Rabbi Michael Leitman, who was part of the Russian immigrant wave of the Seventies, it follows the teachings of Yehuda Ashlag's late son Baruch.

"Like the Kabbalah Centre, Bnei Baruch is open to gentiles, it embraces the modern world, but it's a little less New Agey," says Huss. "They'll study into the middle of the night - there's more emphasis on study than on healing."

But the most popular, authentically Israeli of the local schools of Kabbala is the folkloric Mizrahi style. This is the way of Netivot's Rabbi Ya'acov Yisrael Ifergan (The X-Ray) and his midnight revival meetings and faith healings; the good luck amulets of Jerusalem's 100-plus-year-old Rabbi Yitzhak Kadourie; the cult of worship surrounding the first great popularizer of Kabbala in modern Israel, the Baba Sali; and the popular lectures - along with the controversial, now discontinued exorcisms - of Jerusalem's Rabbi David Batzri.

"When the Mizrahi immigrants came to Israel in the Fifties and Sixties, the Baba Sali, for instance, was a revered name among some of them, but nothing like today. Kabbala was a marginal thing in their communities. It was the rise in power of the Mizrahim that came in the Eighties with Shas, and the new pride in their heritage, and their rebellion against the Ashkenazi, secular dominance that made them turn in such a big way to the Kabbala tzaddikim," says Huss.

Ashkenazis drawn to old-time religion became caught up in it as well; many were present at The X-Ray's revival meeting of the 120,000 candles.

Between Ifergan, Baba Baruch and Baba Sali's grave, Netivot can fairly be called the center of Israeli Kabbala today. The groundwork was laid when the Moroccan-born Baba Sali moved there in 1970; he died there in 1984.

But the traditional home of Kabbala practice in Israel - much more so than Safed - is Jerusalem. The oldest active Kabbalistic yeshivot there are Yeshivat Beit El and Yeshivat Sha'ar Hashamayim. In the early years of the 20th century, the city became a magnet for famed Kabbalists such as Rabbi Yehuda Fattaya from Iraq, Rabbi Shaul Hacohen Dweik from Syria and, from Poland in 1920, Rabbi Yehuda Ashlag, whose grave became a mob scene when Madonna made a late night visit there.

Ashlag came to Israel well before the anti-rationalist, New Age era. But he was a popularizer, alright, and tried to adapt Kabbala to the intellectual trend then in vogue. He was "arguing for the scientific nature of Kabbalah and presenting Kabbalah as the perfect form of Socialism," writes Huss.

"Ashlag had meetings with several leaders of the Zionist Labor party, including David Ben-Gurion, who wrote in a letter to R. Yehuda Brandwein: 'I had the privilege of meeting many times with R. Ashlag of blessed memory, a few years ago, in Tel Aviv. I had long conversations with him, about Kabbalah, as well as about Socialism. I was amazed that he adhered especially to communism. He asked me several times if we will establish a Communist regime after the foundation of the Jewish state.'"

 

 The X-Ray's teachings

Unlike the ecumenical, "tolerant" Kabbala taught overseas by the Kabbalah Centre and favored by celebrities, grassroots Kabbala in Israel is a conservative thing. One of the most learned kabbalists, Jerusalem's Rabbi David Batzri, cursed this year's gay pride rally in the capital by proclaiming that homosexuals get reincarnated as rabbits. [rabbit are not eaten by Jews.]

Likewise, Rabbi Ya'acov Yisrael Ifergan, The X-Ray, has some very conservative social and political views, say sources close to him. (Ifergan does not speak to the media on-the-record.)

"The rabbi says the Muslims are going to become stronger and stronger in Europe and the US, and Islam is going to go to war against Christianity, but Judaism will stay out of it, and emerge standing." Christianity, Islam, Buddhism and all other faiths are "dim lights compared to Judaism's great light," according to sources quoting the rabbi.

Women are not meant to study Judaism, in The X-Ray's view, because God gives them the responsibility of bearing children, raising them and maintaining the home - all of which men are incapable of - so they cannot give their full attention to study as is required. Furthermore, the halachic requirements of modesty make it unfeasible for women to study, according to Ifergan's thinking.

"The rabbi says that a woman cannot allow a lock of hair to fall on her brow, so how can she study?" relates one of his aides. And while Ifergan claims not to have heard of Madonna, he has heard of "Berg," as in Rabbi Philip Berg, leader of the Kabbalah Centre. "The rabbi says Berg offers bits and pieces of Kabbala, but learning true Kabbala requires years and years of study. The rabbi says what they're doing is trickery."

The Department Of Justice Is Forced to Admit
Serious Error in the Detroit "Terrorist Cell" Case

Sep. 22, 2004. In late August, the Department of Justice submitted a remarkable memorandum of law to U.S. District Judge Gerald Rosen, the judge overseeing its prosecution of a suspected terrorist sleeper cell in Detroit.  In the memorandum, DOJ admitted its prosecution had been riddled with a "pattern of mistakes and oversights." For instance, it admitted that the prosecution deprived the defendants of important discoverable evidence - evidence it was required by law to produce. And it admitted that its lawyers had not been candid - to say the least - about this evidence. To the contrary, DOJ noted, the record of the case was "filled with misleading inferences that such material did not exist" - when actually, it did, and the defendants were legally entitled to it.

 A year ago, Attorney General John Ashcroft boasted that this very prosecution was his first court victory in the war on terror. Since then, it has turned out to be his only such victory. And now, it's clear the prosecution was no victory at all - it was a debacle.

Far Graver than Vietnam

Most senior US military officers now believe the war on Iraq has turned into a disaster on an unprecedented scale.

"Bring them on!" President Bush challenged the early Iraqi insurgency in July of last year. Since then, 812 American soldiers have been killed and 6,290 wounded, according to the Pentagon. Almost every day, in campaign speeches, Bush speaks with bravado about how he is "winning" in Iraq. "Our strategy is succeeding," he boasted to the National Guard convention on Tuesday. But, according to the US military's leading strategists and prominent retired generals, Bush's war is already lost. Retired general William Odom, former head of the National Security Agency, told me: "Bush hasn't found the WMD. Al-Qaida, it's worse, he's lost on that front. That he's going to achieve a democracy there? That goal is lost, too. It's lost." He adds: "Right now, the course we're on, we're achieving Bin Laden's ends."

Retired general Joseph Hoare, the former marine commandant and head of US Central Command, told me: "The idea that this is going to go the way these guys planned is ludicrous. There are no good options. We're conducting a campaign as though it were being conducted in Iowa, no sense of the realities on the ground. It's so unrealistic for anyone who knows that part of the world. The priorities are just all wrong." Jeffrey Record, professor of strategy at the Air War College, said: "I see no ray of light on the horizon at all. The worst case has become true. There's no analogy whatsoever between the situation in Iraq and the advantages we had after the second world war in Germany and Japan."

W. Andrew Terrill, professor at the Army War College's strategic studies institute - and the top expert on Iraq there - said: "I don't think that you can kill the insurgency". According to Terrill, the anti-US insurgency, centred in the Sunni triangle, and holding several cities and towns - including Fallujah - is expanding and becoming more capable as a consequence of US policy. "We have a growing, maturing insurgency group," he told me. "We see larger and more coordinated military attacks. They are getting better and they can self-regenerate. The idea there are x number of insurgents, and that when they're all dead we can get out is wrong. The insurgency has shown an ability to regenerate itself because there are people willing to fill the ranks of those who are killed. The political culture is more hostile to the US presence. The longer we stay, the more they are confirmed in that view."

After the killing of four US contractors in Fallujah, the marines besieged the city for three weeks in April - the watershed event for the insurgency. "I think the president ordered the attack on Fallujah," said General Hoare. "I asked a three-star marine general who gave the order to go to Fallujah and he wouldn't tell me. I came to the conclusion that the order came directly from the White House." Then, just as suddenly, the order was rescinded, and Islamist radicals gained control, using the city as a base. "If you are a Muslim and the community is under occupation by a non-Islamic power it becomes a religious requirement to resist that occupation," Terrill explained. "Most Iraqis consider us occupiers, not liberators." He describes the religious imagery common now in Fallujah and the Sunni triangle: "There's talk of angels and the Prophet Mohammed coming down from heaven to lead the fighting, talk of martyrs whose bodies are glowing and emanating wonderful scents."

  "I see no exit," said Record. "We've been down that road before. It's called Vietnamisation. The idea that we're going to have an Iraqi force trained to defeat an enemy we can't defeat stretches the imagination. They will be tainted by their very association with the foreign occupier. In fact, we had more time and money in state building in Vietnam than in Iraq." General Odom said: "This is far graver than Vietnam. There wasn't as much at stake strategically, though in both cases we mindlessly went ahead with the war that was not constructive for US aims. But now we're in a region far more volatile, and we're in much worse shape with our allies." Terrill believes that any sustained US military offensive against the no-go areas "could become so controversial that members of the Iraqi government would feel compelled to resign". Thus, an attempted military solution would destroy the slightest remaining political legitimacy. "If we leave and there's no civil war, that's a victory." General Hoare believes from the information he has received that "a decision has been made" to attack Fallujah "after the first Tuesday in November. That's the cynical part of it - after the election. The signs are all there."

He compares any such planned attack to the late Syrian dictator Hafez al-Asad's razing of the rebel city of Hama. "You could flatten it," said Hoare. "US military forces would prevail, casualties would be high, there would be inconclusive results with respect to the bad guys, their leadership would escape, and civilians would be caught in the middle. I hate that phrase collateral damage. And they talked about dancing in the street, a beacon for democracy." General Odom remarked that the tension between the Bush administration and the senior military officers over Iraqi was worse than any he has ever seen with any previous government, including Vietnam. "I've never seen it so bad between the office of the secretary of defence and the military. There's a significant majority believing this is a disaster. The two parties whose interests have been advanced have been the Iranians and al-Qaida. Bin Laden could argue with some cogency that our going into Iraq was the equivalent of the Germans in Stalingrad. They defeated themselves by pouring more in there. Tragic."

 The Ultimate Stupidity: The Attack on Najaf

I have been thinking for months that if those commanding U.S. forces in Iraq really wanted to perform the ultimate stupidity, and ratchet up exponentially the degree of hatred they face in Iraq and throughout the Muslim world — then they'd surely attack the Imam Ali Shrine in Najaf, or be drawn into a situation where they'd damage it. This is the most important Shiite site in the world, and is holy not only to Shiites (about 120 million people) but also to all the billion-plus Muslims on the planet. It sits atop the tomb of Ali, cousin and son-in-law of the Prophet, fourth caliph ("successor" of Muhammed and political and religious leader of the expanding Muslim world), assassinated by opponents in 661. Ali's partisans supported his son Hussein as next caliph, but Umayyad foes defeated Hussein and 72 followers in battle at Karbala in 680, their martyrdoms producing the enduring division between Sunni and Shia Islam. Hussein is entombed, not with his father, but in Karbala. But according to Shiite tradition, an even more remarkable figure rests under the golden dome of the Ali Shrine: Adam, the first man. A son of Noah, who refused to enter the ark, died in Najaf, and here the patriarch Abraham and his son Isaac once bought a parcel of land now called the Valley of Peace. This is the sprawling Wadi al-Salaam cemetery (the world's largest) that adjoins the shrine. Pilgrimage to Najaf will supposedly bring 70,000 Muslims immediate entry into Paradise.

Najaf was home to Iran's Ayatollah Khomeini for twelve years. It was a target of Saddam Hussein during the Shiite rebellion after the 1991 Gulf War, in which the first President Bush encouraged the Shiites to rise up, only to abandon them ignominiously. (In that episode the shrine was looted and bombed, although soon repaired by the Baathist regime.) Ayatollah Mohammad Sadiq al-Sadr, Muqtada al-Sadr's father, was assassinated here in 1999. In short, Najaf is a hub of mythology, tradition, and historical memories of injustice, resistance and martyrdom that inevitably affect its significance as a military target. Especially when Shiite resistance fighters take refuge there, and use it as a base of operations against unwelcome infidel troops.

Shiites constitute about 10% of the world's Muslims, and are the majority population in Iran (93%) and Azerbaijan (61%). They comprise large communities in India and Pakistan (over 50 million total), but are the majority in only two Arab nations, tiny Bahrain (65%) and Iraq (60%). In Iraqi Shiism, the Arab and Indo-Iranian worlds intersect, and by chance the holiest site of Shiism is located in a proud Arab country, next door to the Shiite powerhouse of Iran, and now surrounded by foreign invaders. The latter, under fire from the general population, come to hate, fear and disparage the Iraqis and, regardless of the orders they receive from their officers, cannot be expected to treat Muslim sites with sensitivity and deference.

"We Do Not Wish to Get Involved with the Mosque"

It is of course, official U.S. policy to avoid damaging the Ali Shrine. "We do not in any way wish to get involved with the mosque," says Secretary of State Colin Powell. "It's a very holy place for all Shia." But how can U.S. forces and their token allies, occupying Najaf and the rest of Iraq, not "get involved" with a prime symbol of the identity of the invaded population? Especially when 1000 members of al-Sadr's Mahdi Army are holed up in and around Najaf's Old City, demanding U.S. withdrawal, and amnesty for the militiamen, as the price for their own retreat?

Blaming continued attacks on the Mahdi Army, U.S. forces broke a cease-fire August 2 in Kufa, next to Najaf, and an earlier agreement not to attempt to arrest al-Sadr. The cleric's forces responded by seizing 18 Iraqi police officers, while in Basra the Mahdi Army declared a jihad against British forces that had arrested four al-Sadr supporters two days earlier. Even so, al- Sadr called for a restoration of a truce signed in June; but this was rejected by the U.S.-appointed governor of Najaf. "Major operations to destroy [al-Sadr's] militia have begun," announced Marine Major David Holahan, of the 1st Battalion, 4th Marines Regiment, while the U.S. and British press promoted the Najaf operation as the "final" assault on the Mahdi Army. "This is one battle we really do feel we can win," a U.S. diplomat told the Telegraph. On August 5, ostensibly responding to attacks on themselves and an Iraqi police station launched from the Valley of Peace by the Mahdi Army, U.S. forces moved into the graveyard, later claiming 300 enemy dead.

The First Shiite Uprising

This was not their first encounter with the Mahdi forces; in April, the U.S. military conducted "Operation Iron Saber" against this militia requiring an extension of tours of duty of the 1st Armored Division. ("The operation will continue until the goal of eliminating and disarming al-Sadr's militia is met," announced a Polish forces spokesman, adding, "I think that will take place soon." That was three months ago.) But why did they attack this group, which needless to say had no connection to 9-11, or to al-Qaeda, or Saddam Hussein, or any previously mentioned target of the "War on Terror"? Al-Sadr, the son of a renowned and beloved cleric killed (hence martyred) by Saddam, whose power base is a huge slum area with a population of two million in Baghdad — a district now named Sadr City — had been in the crosshairs of the occupation for many months. This is because he had denounced it from the outset, and demanded that the foreign troops withdraw or face a jihad.

In April, before the sham "handover of power," his newspaper was banned, a top aide arrested, and a warrant for his arrest issued months earlier suddenly made public. (The charges were connected with the killing of Grand Ayatollah Amd al-Majid al-Khoei, a pro-U.S. cleric flown in from London during the invasion and pegged to administer Najaf. Al-Khoei, whom senior Shiite cleric al-Sistani refused to meet, and who was insulted by common people in the streets of the city, was blown to bits outside the Ali Shrine in April 2003.)

Not cowed by the measures against him, the 30ish al-Sadr turned from peaceful protest to active, armed resistance, as his popularity soared. In May, according to a poll conducted by the "Coalition Provisional Authority" itself, he was viewed favorably by 68% of the Iraqis, and the figure has doubtless risen since. After taking significant casualties in Operation Iron Saber, the U.S. agreed to a cease-fire in June. Al-Sadr urged his forces to leave Najaf and announced plans to enter the planned presidential race. In the course of this operation, machinegun fire from some source produced four twelve by eight inch holes in the golden dome of the shrine; U.S. forces accused the Mahdi Army of shooting up their own holy site, but many doubted this. Iron Saber, according to U.S. forces, killed several thousand militiamen and was a great success. But it didn't rid the U.S. and its allies of this troublesome priest.  Negotiations Fail  On August 10 residents of the central section of Najaf were ordered to evacuate; soon Najaf became a ghost town. Meanwhile tens of thousands rallied in protest in five Iraqi cities, and in Iran, Bahrain, Lebanon, Pakistan and elsewhere. In their minds, Najaf's holy places were already under attack. According to the Washington Post, about 10,000 Iraqis arrived in the city Saturday to defend the shrine. These included Sunnis and Sunni clerics from Fallujah expressing solidarity. The leadership of Shiite Iran has strongly condemned U.S. moves on the shrine, and the Sunni organization, the Muslim Scholars Board, has issued a fatwa ordering police from cooperating with occupying forces.

The assault paused Friday as al-Sadr's representatives negotiated with the U.S.-installed President Iyad Allawi for an end to the confrontation. One reads conflicting reports about why the talks failed. Some suggest that Allawi's national security advisor Mowaffak Rubaie sought to meet al-Sadr, who refused; others state that al-Sadr wished to meet with Rubaie, but could not. Al- Sadr spokesman Qais al-Khazali said a deal had been reached and signed when "we were surprised that they [Allawi's negotiators] got instructions from Dr. Allawi to leave."

An anonymous western diplomat quoted in the Boston Globe says that talks failed because Allawi had made al-Sadr a "relatively generous" offer, including clemency for the outstanding murder charge, but al-Sadr, as mentioned above, demanded a U.S. withdrawal and amnesty for his militiamen. Perhaps an agreement was vetoed by a third party; U.S. officials have opposed granting amnesty to anyone who has killed or injured U.S. troops. In any case, when the talks broke down, U.S. officials indicated that, on instructions from Allawi, Iraqi rather than U.S. forces (six of whom have already died in this operation) would attend to the destruction of the militia. American military officers praised this as a politically wise decision.

U.S. Forces in a Bind

This tactical decision to deploy Iraqis against Iraqis seems not to have eroded support for the Mahdi Army's resistance or opposition to U.S. behavior in Najaf. The residents of Sunni Fajullah, recalling the assistance that Shiites have given them in their resistance to the occupation, have demonstrated in support of al-Sadr and sent forces to his aid in the holy city. The occupation-appointed deputy governor of Najaf, and over half the provincial council, have resigned in protest. Even one of the two U.S.-appointed deputy presidents, Ibrahim Jaafari, has called on "multinational forces to leave Najaf."

On Sunday, of the 1300 delegates to the national conference in Baghdad to select a provisional legislature, over 100 walked out in protest, one stating, "as long as there are air strikes and shelling [in Najaf], we can't have a conference." Many Iraqis fear the U.S. will, Powell's words notwithstanding, "get involved with the mosque," and by inflicting damage upon it, open the gates of hell upon themselves and all complicit in the occupation. 4000 Iraqi security forces in Najaf had defected to al-Sadr's army by Saturday.

Officials of the Iraqi "defense ministry" told Knight Ridder on Sunday that "more than 100 Iraqi national guardsmen and a battalion of Iraqi soldiers chose to quit rather than attack fellow Iraqis in a city that includes some of the holiest sites in Shiite Islam." One high-ranking officer said, "We received a report that a whole battalion (in Najaf) threw down their rifles. We expected this, and we expect it again and again." Perhaps the politically wise decision of using Iraqi rather than U.S. forces just won't work. That would explain why all foreign reporters (except those embedded with the U.S. military) were ordered out of Najaf Sunday. (Al-Jazeera had already been booted for biased reporting. Fox remains.)

Al-Sadr's only real rival for popular support, Grand Ayatollah Ali Hussein Sistani, is in London recovering from a heart operation, urging restraint on both sides and likely undercutting his own moral authority and nationalist credentials in the process. While Shiite opposition to the occupation has been growing for months, the confrontation at the shrine has drawn a clear line between the Shiites and the Coalition now operating through a puppet regime. Even if, as reported, many in Najaf are tiring of al-Sadr's methods, which threaten the business stemming from religious pilgrimage; and even if ranking clerics in Iran are distancing themselves from the Mahdi Army; the second Shiite uprising in four months may well constitute a neocon's "nightmare scenario." Particularly if it widens into a broader patriotic uprising, and thence into an even wider international-Muslim confrontation with the American-dominated foreign forces. On the other hand, the presence of Syrians and Iranians (reported by the Telegraph) may embolden the more audacious warmongers to use setbacks in Iraq to justify further regime-change projects in the region. More Rumsfeldian "creative chaos."

Possibilities

That creative chaos to date has involved the sacking of the Baghdad Museum, the sexual torture of innocents in Adu Ghraib and other prisons, lingering denial of basic utilities and services, the deaths of at least 11,000 civilians, breakdown in security, rampant crime including kidnapping and rape, ineptly improvised and constantly changing administrative institutions, ongoing attacks crippling the oil industry. All of this might be leading to some apocalyptic climax, glorious as the golden dome of Imam Ali's shrine. But of what sort?  Even if among the occupied, some (confused, disoriented, naively optimistic) initially thought the foreigners might bring liberation, these must now conclude---through harsh experience---that liberation is not conferred but rather won. The Mahdi Army cannot, in my view, really liberate anyone with its fundamentalist religious agenda, and this, perhaps, many of its adherents will come to understand. But for the time being, it presents the imperialists with their thorniest challenge. The warriors of this jihad know that their countrymen will desert, or defect to themselves, rather than serve the infidels in Najaf. The original sin of the occupation is that it is, after all, an occupation. Worse, one based on lies. Justified after the fact, after the bogus rationales were all discredited, by the boast, "We overthrew a dictator," the occupation now faces the jihadis' charge that it is worse even than Saddam. (The occupier puzzles at the charge. Aren't we rebuilding schools? he thinks, not realizing that Iraq once had the finest school system in the Arab world, and small need for its reconstruction---until somebody, for reasons some think worth it, damaged it and so much else.)  Worse than Saddam. From the minarets of the mosque joining heaven and earth, the muezzin calls out that charge, and in a land of martyred imams, it resonates powerfully among the oppressed.

The Thief of Baghdad

Missing: one-third of the Pentagon's equipment and $1.9 billion of Iraqi money. Guess who has it?

Last seen: Somewhere in Iraq.

 

 While much of the media is focused on the pitched battle over the control of the holy shrine in Najaf, a bigger scandal is brewing in Iraq that may well have an equally important effect on the future of the U.S. occupation.

 A team of auditors was dispatched to Iraq in late January this year after a string of internal reports showed that the military was wasting billions of dollars of taxpayer money. They have issued eleven reports since June 25, almost all of which have pointed to the misuse of the money allocated for reconstruction, be it Iraqi or Congress-appropriated funds.

 According to two of these reports issued in late July by Stuart Bowen, the auditor-inspector general of the Coalition Provisional Authority (CPA), not only have a full one-third of the items purchased by the Pentagon gone MIA (including the pricey generator), but a whopping. $1.9 billion or more of Iraqi oil revenue has also mysteriously disappeared.

 Embarrassed military authorities did eventually track down the missing generator and much of the money, both of which seemed to have ended up with none other than Halliburton. As it turns out they weren't missing after all; it's just that Dick Cheney's former employer had misplaced or conveniently forgotten to turn in the receipts to the correct people.

 But the Pentagon was not able to explain just how Halliburton gained possession of Iraqi funds when neither the United States Congress nor the Iraqi government authorized their transfer to Halliburton in the first place. Worse yet, the man who authorized the allocation – CPA chief Paul Bremer – had already quietly left Iraq just as the reports were being released.

 Yet days after the much-touted "transfer of sovereignty," the White House revealed an even more startling detail about the reconstruction effort: In over a year, the CPA had managed to spend just 2 percent of the $18.4 billion earmarked for the immediate reconstruction of Iraq. And not a penny was spent on the two areas where the Iraqi people were suffering the most: healthcare or water and sanitation.

 So what is really going on? Is the United States spending too much or too little money in Iraq?

 To answer that question, we need to separate the apples from the pears and the oranges.

Other People's Money

 There are three treasure chests that the Occupation authorities are allowed to dip their hands into. The $87 billion appropriation that Congress granted to the Bush administration in September 2003 was divided into two funds: the bigger chunk, some $65 billion, for military operations and $18.4 billion for reconstruction. The Development Fund of Iraq (a.k.a. the revenues accrued from the sale of Iraqi oil) is the third treasure chest.

 Treasure Chest No. 1 was quickly spent after the invasion on hiring Halliburton to supply the soldiers. In fact, the Pentagon has reportedly exceeded this allotment by an estimated $12 billion. This appropriation has been the source of most of the money spent in Iraq. It is also the money that has been subjected to a series of careful audits by the Defense Contract Audit Agency, the General Accounting Office (the investigative arm of Congress), and Stuart Bowen's team of auditors in Baghdad – all of whom have fiercely criticized Halliburton for its pricing and spending practices.

 The CPA barely touched the $18.4 billion allocated by Congress for reconstruction (Treasure Chest No. 2)because of stringent bidding and oversight requirements to prevent fraud or waste. Many of the reconstruction bills were instead paid for with revenue from the sale of Iraqi oil (Treasure Chest No. 3). Some of this money was spent on Halliburton for the repair of the oil infrastructure; some was simply handed out in cash to local people by soldiers in return for favors such as rebuilding offices or building football fields.

 A New York Times article in late June 2004, described the lax oversight of this money thus:

"The teams have become famous in Iraq for the way they have spread across the country, commissioning repairs and paying for them from satchels bulging with $100 bills shipped by plane from a Federal Reserve vault in East Rutherford, New Jersey. At least $1 billion has been distributed in this fashion – by some estimates more than $2 billion. 'The military commanders love that program, because it buys them friends,' said an administration official, referring to the cash distribution. 'You want to hire everybody on the street, put money in their pockets and make them like you. We have always spent Iraqi money on that.'"

 So here is what it all means:

 One, the U.S. taxpayers spent a lot of money on the soldiers, but the Pentagon paid Halliburton to do the work. The company billed the military top dollar knowing that the brass would look the other way. The gravy train finally ground to a halt when two brave members of Congress inquired about the results of the internal audit.

 Two, almost none of the money that American taxpayers provided for reconstruction was spent because the rules were too stringent for the CPA's taste.

 And three, we dished out Iraqi money to companies like Halliburton like it was going out of style because the United States government knew that neither Congress nor the United Nations would ask us difficult questions about what we were doing with other people's money. Equally importantly, Bush officials were worried that the new Iraqi government might ask us difficult questions about their money once they gained any modicum of power. So they were eager to spend the money while they could.

 In other words, despite access to billions of dollars for reconstruction, the CPA has done little to serve the interests of either the American taxpayer or the Iraqi people. The reconstruction effort has, however, been a cash bonanza for companies like Halliburton.

The Billion-dollar Corporate Expense Account

 Halliburton has been the biggest beneficiary of the CPA and Pentagon's liberal spending policies – the company alone got $3.9 billion last year to repair oil fields and provide food, laundry, sanitation and transportation services to the military.

 Where did the money go? Whistle-blowers from the company have sent testimony to Congress detailing the many wasteful practices: paying $100 for a bag of laundry; abandoning $85,000 trucks for the lack of a spare tire. Meanwhile, other companies like Science Applications International Corporation of San Diego were shipping armored Humvees for company executives on specially chartered jets and paying themselves $200 an hour to run a U.S. propaganda television station that no one was watching.

 An internal Pentagon audit completed two weeks ago and reported in the Wall Street Journal earlier this month found that Halliburton failed to adequately account for "more than $1.8 billion" it has received so far for providing logistical support to troops in Iraq and Kuwait.

When challenged by military auditors to account for its missing equipment and receipts, the Houston-based Halliburton told the Pentagon that it did not have enough staff to keep track of the $400 million it was spending in Iraq – an explanation that the Defense Department was surprisingly quick to accept. Linda Theis, a spokeswoman for the Army Materiel Command, told reporters, "It was the pace. It was the magnitude of this contract."

In statements to the press, on the other hand, Halliburton flatly denies any problems with its accounting procedures. Randy Harl, president of Kellogg, Brown and Root, the Halliburton subsidiary that conducts the work in Iraq, said, "In general, we have found that the subcontractors are properly billing on the basis provided in the subcontracts. We are operating in a remote, hostile and ever-changing environment in Iraq. In such an environment, there are bound to be challenges. Any issues related to billings will not only be resolved quickly and responsibly, but also resolved in such a way that it will not affect any services provided to our soldiers."

But in written testimony submitted to Congress, Halliburton's own auditor, Marie de Young, revealed that the company's internal auditors (nicknamed the "Tiger Team") were not doing their job properly. De Young, who was hired in December 2003 to help oversee Operation Iraqi Freedom contracts, told Congress:

When the Tiger Team examined a subcontract, they just checked to make sure that all the forms were in the file. They didn't assess the reasonableness of the price or consult with site managers. The team's sole purpose was to close as many subcontracts as possible, under the mistaken assumption that everything that was closed prior to the arrival of the government audit team would be exempt from further scrutiny.

De Young also made clear the company's intentions: "I had been advised by subcontract administrators who quit the company that employees get moved around when they get too close to the truth. Ironically, other previous managers who tolerated bad practices were promoted to better paying jobs in Iraq or Houston or Jordan."

 The final touch of irony: Halliburton housed the Tiger Team at the five-star Kempinski Hotel in Kuwait, paying each of them a whopping $10,000 per month for their troubles. At the time, U.S. soldiers were required to live in tents at a cost of $1.39 a day. When the military asked Halliburton employees to move into the tents, they refused.

Crimes and Consequences

 The audit reports have produced little real action on the part of the Pentagon thus far. Last Monday, Halliburton announced that the Pentagon had told the company that it plans to withhold 15 percent ($60 million) of its monthly payment until they find all the missing receipts. But the Pentagon reversed its decision the very next day, announcing that it will give the company more time to find the missing paper work and prove their costs before imposing the penalty. Halliburton has already been granted extra time twice.

 The audits may also not have much effect on the future of the reconstruction effort, which remains grim. Bremer's departure in June was only one in an exodus of occupation officials and contractors, derisively labeled by a U.S. soldier as "The League of Frightened Gentleman," fleeing the dangerous situation in Iraq. The German engineers hired to repair the Daura power plant in Baghdad left behind enormous disassembled machines strewn across the plant floor. "They didn't contact me," said Bashir Khalif Omir, the plant director at the time. "They took their luggage at midnight and they left."

 When Bremer caught his jet plane out of Iraq, two heavily armed Blackwater private military watched his back, rifles pointed menacingly at camera crews. There were no flowers from an adoring Iraqi public, not even anything similar to the dramatic lift-off from the roof of the U.S. embassy in Saigon marked the occasion – just a quiet, top-secret escape to freedom (and a lucrative book contract). But Bremer left behind a nation that was not just more dangerous but also poorer for his efforts.

The Fate of Iraq's Christians

 Just after celebration of the Festival of the Cross (Aida d-Sliwa) on Friday, 10 September, the village of Baghdeda, located southeast of Mosul, on the Nineveh Plains, in the Ninawa Governorate, came under mortar attack. Thus far a complete tally of the dead and injured in this village of 30,000 Christians has not been transmitted abroad. We know that the Sheeto family lost 13-year-old Mark Louis Sheeto and that his brother and sister were critically injured.

It is unusual for information from Christian villages to filter outside the area currently under military and political pressure from the Kurdish Democratic Party. Kurds are barring Western journalists from entering villages like Dayrabun ("Monastary of the Bishop") which are not in any danger zone, but are being denied resettlement by their Christian inhabitants (reported by Thiry August, a Belgian who tried to visit the Faysh Khabour area this summer). The KDP is determined to expand its control as far to the west and south as possible into areas now inhabited by Chaldo-Assyrians. Under the Transitional Administrative Law, so favorable to Kurds, the objects of Western sympathy and funds, any territory in the three provinces adjoining Dohuk, Arbil and Sulaymaniya (Ninawa, Tamim [Kirkuk] and Diyala) that Kurds can show they controlled on March 19, 2003 (prior to the invasion), may become part of the Kurdish controlled region in northern Iraq (TAL, Article 53A).

This provision allows Kurds to create "facts on the ground" in the Mosul and Kirkuk areas in particular, at the expense of unarmed ethnic and religious minorities - to wit - the Christians of Iraq, the Yezidis, the Shabat, and the Turkomens. The advantages of controlling Kirkuk are well known. But the Mosul area, now the scene of fierce attacks on Christians and Turkomens, are less well recognized.

 

 — The Nineveh Plains hold Iraq's largest and most fertile agricultural fields (barley, wheat and legumes). The Chaldo-Assyrians had been farming these for millennia until the steady pressure of Kurdish population growth combined with Baathist village destruction forced many of them to be displaced. There is considerable evidence that Kurdish pastoralists have had a difficult time becoming productive farmers. (Assyrian Star, Spring 2004, "Helwa, the Forgotten Tragedy")

— The Nineveh Plains, through which passes the upper Tigris River and its tributaries, holds the main water source for central and south Iraq. Control of places like Faysh Khabour (to where thousands of Christian villagers are not being allowed to return [NYT Sept. 12, 2004 "Assyrians in Syria"]) lies at the juncture of both the Tigris as it enters Iraq from Turkey, and where the oil pipeline from the Kirkuk fields enters Turkey on its way to Ceyhan. The KDP, and its strategic allies, are grabbing control of Faysh Khabour and its environs, at the expense of the area's indigenous Christian inhabitants.

— The possibility of gas fields on the Nineveh Plains makes control of this region triply attractive for the Kurds. Barzani has already threatened war with regard to Kirkuk

 [It is suspicious] that that the methodical killing of Turkomens and ChaldoAssyrian leaders by "unknown" assailants stands to profit the KDP, whether this organization acts as a Sunni Muslim force or a secular Kurdish one.

The attack on Baghdeda, also known as Qaraqosh, marks the long and largely ignored attacks on Iraq's Christians who, with the exception of some 10,000 Armenians, descendents of refugees from the atrocities of WWI, form the one million or more indigenous Christian population of Iraq. The term "Assyrian" by which this community has been known historically (always called so by their Armenian neighbors) includes several church communities of which the largest is the Chaldean Catholic. Also included are two branches of the Church of the East, and members of the Orthodox and Catholic Syrian churches, together with small Protestant and Seventh Day Adventist congregations.

Both the Baathists (in Iraq and in Syria) and the Kurds have attempted to divide this community along denominational lines for easier control. But at their own conference of Chaldeans, Syriacs and Assyrians, convened in Baghdad 22-24 October 2003, the unified, albeit artificial term, Chaldo-Assyrian, was adopted to forestall Kurdish poliltical manipulation, which nonetheless continues. This term appears in the Transitional Administrative Law (TAL) signed on 8 March 2004 by the Governing Council. "Assyrian," dropped from Iraqi census since 1977 as punishment for opposition to the Baath regime, is widely used in the diaspora. But TAL recognition of this community marks a historic first in Iraqi law.

The Chaldo-Assyrians form the world's last and largest compact community of Aramaic (Syriac) speakers, the oldest continuously written and spoken language of the Middle East, and after Chinese, the second oldest continuously written and spoken language of the world. This now endangered language will become extinct if the Chaldo-Assyrians are forced into mass exodus from Iraq, a prospect activated by their inability to maintain a foothold, a safe haven, in northern Iraq. A combination of Kurdish chauvinism and fundamentalist terrorism (both Arab and Kurdish) has already driven large numbers, probably thousands, of Chaldo-Assyrians out of the country. As Patrick Cockburn has reported recently with regard to the Turkomens, the US military is apparently being manipulated by the KDP in the attacks on Shiite Turkomens at Tel Afar, also in the path of KDP expansion

< http://news.independent.co.uk/world/  >. Blind sympathy for Kurds is allowing the US to become complicit in the ethnic displacement of Christians as well as Turkomens. Specifically in the Christian case, the community is regularly denied funds for refugee resettlement and village reconstruction while Kurdish villagers settle on former Christian lands with US and international funding.

The early evening mortar attack on the homes of Christians in Baghdeda comes in the wake of a bloody forty days for this community, highlighted by the 1 August simultaneous bombing of five churches, one in Mosul and the others in Baghdad. While it has been impossible to determine the instigators of violence against Christians in Basra and Baghdad, and no doubt some of the Baghdad kidnapping for ransom is the work of criminal gangs possibly allied to the insurgency, the upsurge in attacks on Christians in the north, on the Nineveh Plains especially, is widely believed to be the work of Kurdish Democratic Party agents. Kurdish attacks on Christians has a long history, stretching well before WWI and the Hamidiya units of Kurdish irregulars that were largely responsible for the Assyrian genocide in southeastern Turkey and northwest Iran. The current attacks appear to be targeted at Christians in the north of Iraq, on the Nineveh Plains, and the villages to which those fleeing Basra and Baghdad are hoping to return. These internally displaced persons (IDPs), as well as the refugees stranded in Jordan and Syria, need both resettlement funds and security from Kurdish attacks and pressure. Yet the community is currently only supported by funds collected from the diaspora - and in some cases - when the diaspora funds a project, such as electrical generators, Kurdish thugs blow them up. In other instances, the KDP has blockaded Assyrian villages and prevented delivery of food supplies.

Over the past few days alone, a sharply increased pattern of attack on Christians in the north has emerged as gathered from websites < http://www.bethsuryoyo.com/ >. What is happening in the more isolated villages remaining in Berwari, Aqra and Zakho may be even more deadly.

1. Mosul, Nineveh Province. 8 Sept. Video of real or enacted beheading distributed in Mosul to frighten Assyrians into leaving the area.

"According to residents of Mosul, a group of Islamic terrorists has distributed in the past few days a video CD containing the beheading of two Assyrian Christians from Mosul. To date, the identity of the Assyrian victims is still unknown. Many residents have seen the video and claimed that it was very disturbing."

2. Mosul, Nineveh Province. 8 Sept. Assassination of three women, wounding of another and driver, as they traveled back to home village of Bartilla from Mosul.

"On Tuesday August 31, 2004, Tara Majeed Betros Al-Hadaya, Taghrid Abdul-Massih Ishaq Betros and her sister Hala Abdul-Massih Ishaq Betros, were murdered in Mosul. The three Assyrian victims were returning to their homes in Bartilla, from a hospital in Mosul, where they worked, when their car was attacked by a group of terrorists who opened heavy fire at the car.

The attack took place in the section between the Television area and the Kokajli area on the main road between Mosul and Bartilla. Also injured in the attack was another Assyrian woman, 'Amera Nouh Sha'ana who was also going home to Bartilla and the Assyrian driver, Naji Betros Ishaq. The three female victims were in their twenties.

The residents of Bartilla are followers of the Syriac Orthodox Church, and the town is the birthplace of His Holiness Mor Ignatius Yacoub III, the late Patriarch of the Syriac Orthodox Church."

3. Mosul, Nineveh Province. 9 Sept. Two Assyrian brothers, both community leaders, are riddled with bullets. Community believes goal of intensified attacks is to terrorize them and force the indigenous people to leave, and thus stop disputing Kurdish claims to Mosul, now being vociferously put forward in Kurdish media.

"On Thursday September 2, 2004, Khaled Boulos (1972-2004) and his brother Hani Boulos (1976-2004), who are known as the sons of Hasina, were murdered in Mosul in the Al-Sa'a district. The deceased Assyrian brothers were known by many Assyrians for their honorable stands in Mosul in defending and assisting other Assyrians. According to eyewitnesses, on September 2, at noon (local Mosul time) in the Al-Mayasa (Al-Sa'a) district, a car carrying a group of armed terrorists pulled by Khaled and Hani Boulos, where the armed terrorists came out of the car and began firing heavily at the two Assyrians, killing them instantly. The two Assyrian brothers worked for a foreign company in Mosul, which the terrorists used as an excuse to murder them. However, the peaceful Assyrians of Mosul believe that the main goal of the intensified attacks on Assyrian Christians is to terrorize the indigenous Assyrians and force them to leave their homeland."

4. Mosul, Nineveh Province. 9 Sept. Assyrian political activist run over by car without plates as terrorists target Christians. Suspected terrorists are considered part of Kurdish plan to empty the region of Assyrians who dispute Kurdish claim to entire north.

"On Wednesday September 1, 2004, during a terrorist attack on the building of the Governorate of Ninawa, Nisan Sliyo Shmoel was injured in his shoulder. Mr. Shmoel was taken immediately to the hospital where he was treated. After treatment, he was released from the hospital that same day, but the terrorists were awaiting his release and targeted him with an unmarked car (not carrying plate numbers), which they used to drive him over in front of the hospital entrance. Mr. Shmoel died immediately.

Martyr Nisan Sliyo Shmoel was 43 years old. He is survived by his wife and 6 children (5 daughters and a son). The oldest of his children is 15 years old. Shortly after the toppling of Saddam Hussein's regime, Nisan Sliyo Shmoel joined the Assyrian Patriotic Party (Gaba Atranaya Aturaya) to serve his Assyrian people. Mr. Shmoel was also a private in the newly formed Iraqi Army, which he had joined to serve his country."

We Are Losing the War In Iraq

September 21, 2004 - Every major military indicator shows the war in Iraq is going badly. The United States is losing ground, losing hearts and minds, and losing the war. Three U.S. soldiers have been killed in Iraq on average every day in September, up from August, which was up from July. Major cities are now considered too unsafe for U.S. forces to enter, including Fallujah, Samarra, Ramadi and other cities in Iraq’s Sunni regions. The Shia populated urban areas are not—for the moment—in open revolt, but it is difficult to find large cities outside the Kurdish regions where U.S. forces have effective control, including large sections of Baghdad. Time magazine reported this week that insurgents loyal to Abu Mousab al-Zarqawi, the most wanted terrorist in Iraq, are patrolling one of Baghdad’s major thoroughfares—within mortar range of the U.S. embassy. Washington officials insist Iraqi elections will take place as planned in January 2005, but officials in Baghdad are more pessimistic. "We are in deep trouble in Iraq," warned Senator Chuck Hagel last Sunday.

Reconstruction projects critical to improving the daily lives of Iraqis never took off at the rate promised by administration officials and now are stalled. A senior Iraqi official with the Baghdad Ministry of Public Works complained to the New York Times, "For a year we have been talking, with beautiful PowerPoint documents, but without a drop of water." Little has been actually built and the prospects for turn around are poor. The administration request to transfer $3.4 billion to security forces from the $18 billion Congress allocated for reconstruction means that many projects will be cancelled. Baghdad officials say their water and sewage budgets will be cut in half, for example. This is on top of the already dismal record. Of the 100 projects the U.S. originally planned, they say, only four are scheduled to start by the end of the year.

The plan Senator John Kerry detailed September 20 offers a solid, reasonable approach for salvaging the situation. Whoever is president should pursue this plan to internationalize the security responsibilities, the attempts to promote democracy and the reconstruction projects (including the contracts). The strongest argument in favor of this approach is that it may be the last chance. Judging from the comments of leading Republicans over the past few days, there is widespread concern about the deteriorating situation in Iraq and there may be the basis for forging a new bipartisan approach along the goals outlined by Kerry. The strongest argument against the Kerry approach is that it may be too late.

There may not be a solution to Iraq. There have been so many profound mistakes, starting with the decision to launch this war against a weapons threat that did not exist, that it may not be possible to salvage the situation. The U.S. cannot cut and run, but neither is it wise to simply stay and die. Officials should start planning for a careful, safe withdrawal, almost certainly on a timetable considerably faster than the four years Kerry suggests.

This is not a reflection on the performance of U.S. troops or leadership. As Cornwallis learned at Yorktown, Napoleon at Moscow and Hitler at Stalingrad, sometimes the best generals, the best troops and the best weapons cannot compensate for deeply flawed strategic vision.

 Le crime du 11 septembre 2001: quelques faits troublants

Le 12 septembre 2001, le Conseil de sécurité de l'O.N.U. a adopté une résolution appelant tous les États à «travailler d'urgence de concert pour amener devant la justice les commanditaires, les organisateurs et les auteurs» de l'attaque qui avait eut lieu la veille contre les États-Unis. En dépit de centaines d'incarcérations — selon le ministre de la justice américain John Ashcroft il s'agit de la plus grosse enquête criminelle de l'histoire des États-Unis — pas un seul individu n'a été reconnu coupable de ce crime sans précédent et de nombreuses questions troublantes restent sans réponse à ce jour. Si l'on en croit de récents sondages d'opinion, un nombre croissant d'Américains et d'Européens suspectent le gouvernement Bush de dissimuler ses défaillances, voire même sa complicité dans ce crime.

L'attaque du 11 septembre 2001 est bien évidemment un acte criminel. Dans tous les pays, il existe des procédures bien établies pour enquêter sur de tels actes. Les enquêteurs enregistrent et examinent tous les témoignages qui peuvent aider à élucider le crime, accumulent indices et preuves, établissent l'identité des suspects et émettent des hypothèses en ce qui concerne le mobile des auteurs du délit. Dans le cas qui nous intéresse, toutes ces procédures ont été transgressées ou ignorées par les autorités américaines. Le jour même où eut lieu cette attaque et avant même qu'aucun élément de preuve n'ait été collecté, les officiels américains ont, comme l'a exprimé l'Associated Press, «commencé à tisser la trame d'une histoire impliquant Osama ben Laden dans la pire attaque terroriste qu'aient jamais connue les États-Unis au cours de l'histoire». Le sénateur républicain Orrin Hatch de la Commission judicaire du Sénat déclara en ce 11 septembre que «[les services de renseignements américains] ont intercepté des renseignements impliquant des personnes liées à ben Laden ayant reconnu que quelques cibles furent atteintes.» Quelques jours plus tard fut présenté au monde la version plus ou moins définitive du scénario du crime, à savoir qu'un certain nombre de terroristes arabes se seraient emparés de quatre avions de ligne armés de couteaux et les auraient pilotés contre les cibles qu'on sait. Dans les trois jours qui suivirent, une liste définitive des kamikazes arabes, auteurs prétendus du détournement, était rendue publique par le F.B.I.

Peu après les événements, les agences de presse ont signalé qu'un exemplaire du Coran et un manuel de pilotage en arabe avaient été trouvés dans une voiture de location à l'aéroport de Boston, qu'un autre exemplaire du Coran avait aussi été laissé dans un bar fréquenté par les prétendus pirates de l'air, qu'un testament en arabe fait par Mohammed Atta avait été trouvé dans un sac qui n'avait pas été embarqué dans l'avion détourné où il est censé s'être trouvé et qu'un passeport ayant appartenu à l'un des pirates avait été retrouvé intact près du World Trade Center avant l'écroulement des tours. Aucune explication n'a été fournie pour expliquer comment ce document a pu chuter de sa poche, échapper à la fournaise et tomber miraculeusement préservé à un endroit bien en évidence en l'espace de quelques minutes. Toutes ces déclarations ont eu dans l'ensemble pour conséquence d'affermir dans le public l'idée que les Arabes étaient les responsables de ce crime.

Rétrospectivement, à la lumière des lenteurs apparentes du F.B.I., de la C.I.A. et des autres organismes fédéraux à prévoir les événements et à prendre des mesures en conséquence (comme cela a été prétendu par la commission d'enquête du Sénat et divers commentateurs), on est en droit de s'étonner que le F.B.I. et la presse aient pu se révéler tout d'un coup si efficaces ce jour-là ou encore de se demander si l'information publiée n'aurait pas été plutôt préparée d'avance.

En dépit de la célérité inhabituelle mise à « identifier » les auteurs du crime et à accuser leur maître à penser des grottes d'Afghanistan, le patron du F.B.I., Robert Mueller, a déclaré le 19 avril 2002: «Au cours de notre enquête, nous n'avons pas découvert le moindre bout de papier — que ce soit ici, aux États-Unis, ou bien dans la mine de renseignements trouvée en Afghanistan ou n'importe où ailleurs — où quoique ce soit ayant un rapport avec la conspiration du 11 septembre 2001 ait pu être décelé.» Le président George Bush, qui le lendemain de l'attaque accusait sans ambages Osama ben Laden d'en être le cerveau, déclara le 13 mars 2002 lors d'une conférence de presse: «Je ne sais pas où il se trouve. Vous savez, Kelly, je n'ai pas beaucoup de temps à lui consacrer; pour être honnête avec vous... je ne dirais pas nécessairement qu'il est au cœur d'un quelconque commandement... Je répéterai ce que j'ai déjà dit. Vraiment, je ne me soucie pas à ce point-là de lui.»

Le ministre de la justice, John Ashcroft, qui, le 12 septembre 2001, prétendit qu'au moins cinquante personnes sur le territoire des États-Unis étaient directement impliquées dans la préparation du crime, n'a fait inculper personne suite à ses déclarations. Il s'avère maintenant être dans l'impossibilité d'obtenir la condamnation de Zacarias Moussaoui — le seul individu emprisonné aux États-Unis dans le cadre de l'affaire, accusé pour avoir eu connaissance du piratage avant son exécution — ou s'en désintéresser. La capture au Pakistan, en mars 2003, de Khalid Cheikh Mohammed provoqua, à la Maison Blanche, la réaction suivante: «Khalid Cheikh Mohammed est un des plus jeunes et un des plus importants lieutenants d'Osama ben Laden, un stratège clé d'Al Quaida et le cerveau de l'attaque du 11 septembre [...] Khaid Cheikh Mohammed figure sur la liste des terroristes les plus recherchés tenue par le F.B.I. et est sous le coup d'une accusation fédérale depuis 1996, à la suite de la conspiration aérienne de Manille, ce complot dont l'objectif était de perpétrer des attaques à la bombe contre des compagnies aériennes civiles américaines.» En dépit de cela, alors qu'il est emprisonné par les États-Unis depuis sa capture, aucune accusation n'a été retenue contre lui. L'endroit de sa détention n'a pas été révélé et la presse n'a pas été autorisée à l'approcher ni, il va sans dire, à s'entretenir avec lui.

On annonce régulièrement la détention d'Arabes ou de musulmans «suspectés» d'être plus ou moins impliqués dans l'affaire du 11 septembre. Ces suspects sont ensuite relâchés sans tambour ni trompette après s'être assuré des titres de la presse afin que la version officielle de l'affaire ne soit pas remise en cause.

Lorsque des gens perdent la vie dans un accident d'avion, la première chose que l'on fait est d'avertir les proches des défunts. Dans le cas d'un avion de ligne, le personnel au sol établit la liste des passagers avant leur départ et en garde une copie, de sorte qu'on est en droit de s'attendre à trouver sur ladite liste le nom de tous les passagers, équipage compris aussi bien que les pirates supposés, et ce, pour chacun des quatre appareils détournés. Il se trouve cependant que le F.B.I. et les compagnies aériennes dont les avions ont été détruits lors de l'attaque du 11 septembre 2001 ont refusé catégoriquement de rendre publiques ces listes. La seule preuve que les individus concernés sont morts lors de la destruction des avions est gardée secrète, même pour les familles des victimes. Ces dernières ne peuvent donc être sûres que de leur mort à bord de ces avions, plutôt qu'ailleurs.

La principale preuve démontrant que des Arabes ont effectivement été embarqués sur les quatre avions n'a en fait jamais été présentée au public. Aucune explication n'a été fournie pour cette surprenante mise au secret. On a émis l'hypothèse que la publication de ces listes pourrait porter atteinte à la vie privée des victimes et de leur famille. Mais une telle explication ne tient pas, car le nom de toutes les victimes (à l'exception des supposés pirates) fut publié par la presse peu après le 11 septembre, c'est-à-dire après que les familles aient été informées de la perte des leurs. Or aucune des listes publiées par les principaux journaux ne contient de noms arabes. Si aucun nom de ce type n'apparaît dans les listes de passagers originales, l'intégralité de l'explication officielle doit être considérée comme une gigantesque fable. Mais, même si les autorités américaines se décidaient un jour à publier ces listes, leur authenticité ne pourrait désormais plus être garantie.

Et comme si cela ne suffisait pas, peu de temps après le 11 septembre, la B.B.C. et d'autres grands organes de presse ont révélé que quelques personnes désignées par le F.B.I. comme étant ceux de kamikazes ayant péri dans l'attaque étaient en réalité bien vivantes au Maroc et en Arabie saoudite. Ces dernières ont été choquées de découvrir leur nom, ainsi que leur date de naissance et leur photo sur le site du F.B.I., et d'y être présentées de surcroît comme terroristes ayant péri. Elles exigèrent des explications et des excuses. et à la suite de cela le directeur du F.B.I. admit que certaines identités avaient pu avoir été «empruntées», sans se lancer dans plus d'explication. Plus tard, il revint sur sa déclaration en affirmant que le F.B.I. avait correctement identifié tous les pirates et aucune modification ne fut faite dans la liste dressée par le F.B.I., laquelle est encore accessible sur le site de cet organisme. Il n'en reste pas moins que le fait que certains terroristes prétendus sont en réalité vivants est inconciliable avec le fait qu'ils sont déclarés morts. Et dans ce cas, qui sont les vrais terroristes, si tant est qu'il y en ait eu? Le F.B.I. n'apporte aucune réponse à cette question.

L'administration américaine a tenté avec opiniâtreté d'entraver l'enquête sur les événements du 11 septembre 2001, ce qui eut pour conséquence qu'aucune enquête criminelle à proprement parler n'a été ouverte. En réalité, le F.B.I. s'est vu intimer, huit semaines après les attentats, l'ordre de restreindre le champ de ses investigations sur le crime commis afin de concentrer son activité sur la prévention de nouvelles attaques. L'effondrement des tours du World Trade Center ne fit pas non plus l'objet d'une véritable enquête. Un élément qui aurait pu servir à l'enquête, tel l'acier de la structure effondrée, fut enlevé pour être vendu à la ferraille à l'étranger avant que les enquêteurs aient pu en examiner les défectuosités éventuelles. D'autres preuves encore furent détruites, parmi lesquelles des enregistrements dans lesquels des contrôleurs aériens témoignaient de ce qu'ils avaient entendu en cette journée tragique. Aucun enregistrement vidéographique ni aucune photographie certifiée des débris des avions ni de l'avion qui s'écrasa sur le Pentagone ne fut rendus public. Les témoignages individuels susceptibles de contredire la version officielle furent systématiquement ignorés par les enquêteurs. Le F.B.I. exigea des témoins qu'ils s'abstiennent de tout contact avec les journalistes. Les familles des victimes furent généreusement indemnisées — 1,8 millions de dollars en moyenne lorsqu'il s'agissait de parenté immédiate — à la condition expresse de ne pas engager de procédures judiciaires au cours desquelles des témoins pourraient être assignés à comparaître ou des preuves montrées, toutes choses susceptibles de faire éclater la vérité. La Maison Blanche déploya beaucoup d'efforts pour s'opposer à une enquête du Congrès. Cependant, deux ans plus tard, cédant aux pressions des familles des victimes, le Congrès accepta finalement d'entreprendre une telle enquête. La Maison Blanche accepta à contrecœur de coopérer avec la commission du Congrès, mais seulement après que le mandat de celle-ci fut limité en compétence et en durée, et que son président et son directeur exécutif furent nommés par le président Bush. La commission, dans son « rapport final » présenté en juin 2004, a éludé les questions les plus déterminantes concernant ce qui s'est réellement passé le 11 septembre. Il n'est pas possible de considérer ce rapport comme étant compréhensif et final. Il disculpe en bloc l'administration américaine de tout méfait, toute négligence ou toute complicité.

D'autres aspects de la version officielle ont encore fait l'objet de recherches.

Il est loin d'être prouvé que les deux tours du World Trade Center se soient écroulées à cause de l'incendie engendré par l'impact des avions. Des pompiers et d'autres personnes ont signalé avoir entendu des explosions ou ressenti leurs effets dans les bâtiments avant leur effondrement. Vu de l'extérieur, ce dernier évoque une démolition contrôlée. On sait moins que le World Trade Center n° 7, un bâtiment de quarante-sept étages situé près des tours jumelles, s'est écroulé également le même jour tard en fin d'après-midi, et ce, sans avoir été percuté par un avion. Il semble qu'il avait été atteint par des débris en feu provenant des deux tours, débris qui auraient causé un incendie aboutissant à l'écroulement de la construction. On n'a cependant jusqu'à présent jamais enregistré qu'un immeuble de cette taille se soit écroulé à la suite d'un incendie. Aucune preuve n'a été apportée démontrant que le feu qui s'était déclaré dans le bâtiment en question était impossible à maîtriser. L'immeuble avait été évacué tôt dans la journée. Son effondrement rappelle de manière très frappante une démolition contrôlée avec des explosifs. Larry Silberstein, le milliardaire juif qui s'était assuré pour lui-même, six semaines avant l'attaque, un bail de quatre-vingt-dix-neuf ans sur l'ensemble constitué par le World Trade Center, déclara lors d'un entretien: «Je me souviens avoir reçu un coup de fil du... euh... chef des pompiers me disant qu'ils n'étaient pas encore sûrs de pouvoir contenir le feu, et j'ai répondu: "Nous avons déjà eu tellement de pertes humaines, que la meilleure chose que nous puissions faire est peut-être encore de le faire s'effondrer". Ils prirent alors la décision de le raser et nous avons assisté à l'effondrement du bâtiment. » A-t-il été détruit à l'aide d'explosifs et, si oui, quand ces derniers ont-ils été introduits dans la construction?

La version officielle prétend en particulier qu'un avion de ligne s'est écrasé sur le Pentagone, mais nous n'en avons aucune preuve photographique: l'intégralité de l'avion, ailes comprises, aurait disparu dans le bâtiment, donnant naissance à une étroite galerie. De nombreuses personnes enquêtant de manière indépendante sur la question remettent fortement en cause l'explication officielle tant pour des raisons techniques que du fait de l'existence de preuves contradictoires. Il semblerait bien plutôt qu'il se soit agi d'un missile. Si tel est le cas, la question est alors de savoir qui l'a tiré.

Un quatrième avion, se dirigeant prétendument sur la Maison Blanche, s'est écrasé près de Shanksville, dans l'État de Pennsylvanie. Selon le compte rendu officiel, il se serait écrasé après que les passagers eurent tenté de maîtriser les pirates, avec pour conséquence la perte de contrôle de l'appareil par le pilote et son écrasement consécutif à grande vitesse. Les indices collectés sur les lieux de l'impact avec le sol suggèrent que l'avion aurait en fait été abattu par l'armée américaine. Cette hypothèse est corroborée par des témoins oculaires locaux qui jurent avoir vu un avion non identifié au-dessus du lieu où l'avion s'est écrasé ainsi que des débris, trouvés à 10 km. de distance, tombant de l'avion avant qu'il eut atteint le sol. Ces témoignages contredisent la thèse officielle et restent inexpliqués.

D'autres questions concernent la connaissance anticipée de l'attaque du 11 septembre 2001 qu'aurait eu à ce qu'on prétend le gouvernement israélien ou le Mossad. Le jour de la tragédie, cinq individus identifiés par la police comme étant israéliens, ont été vus en train de filmer les deux tours en feu, semblant se réjouir beaucoup du spectacle. Une personne, du nom de Maria, fut à ce point scandalisée par leur comportement, qu'elle appela la police. Ils furent arrêtés et gardés en prison pendant plus de deux mois, avant d'être expulsés vers Israël. Alors que la presse a rapporté ces faits et d'autres détails encore sur ces personnes, aucune raison n'a été donnée pour justifier une détention aussi longue. Leur chef apparemment s'était enfui vers Israël. Peu de temps après, des journaux arabes écrivaient que quelque quatre mille Israéliens travaillant au World Trade Center ne s'étaient pas présentés au travail le 11 septembre 2001, suggérant qu'ils auraient été prévenus par les autorités israéliennes. Cette information s'est révélée fausse, mais n'était néanmoins pas une pure invention. En fait, le 12 septembre, le Jerusalem Post avait signalé que le gouvernement israélien s'inquiétait du sort de quatre mille Israéliens qu'on savait résider ou travailler aux alentours du World Trade Center. Maintenant que les choses se sont quelque peu tassées, il s'avère qu'un seul Israélien a péri dans l'une des deux tours. Il n'était même pas employé.

Quand ceux qui commettent un crime ne peuvent pas être identifiés, on doit se poser la question suivante: à qui profite le crime? Dans le cas de l'attaque du 11 septembre, il était d'emblée clair que le crime ne profitait aucunement au monde musulman, pour lequel Osama ben Laden prétend combattre: en fait rien ne pouvait même être plus néfaste à la cause musulmane qu'un tel acte. En revanche, pour les États-Unis et Israël, ce crime offrait une foule de perspectives.

Il faut rappeler que le groupe dont Donald Rumsfeld est le centre (néoconservateurs) fut signataire d'un rapport publié en 2000 sous le sigle de Projet pour un nouveau siècle américain et dans lequel était souligné que les États-Unis devaient établir et consolider leur hégémonie (militaire) dans les décennies à venir. Les auteurs de ce rapport y déclarent en substance: «Le processus de transformation (de la défense américaine), même s'il amène des changements révolutionnaires, demandera vraisemblablement beaucoup de temps en l'absence de quelque événement catastrophique ou catalytique, tel un nouveau Pearl Harbor.»

Le 11 septembre fut-il le Pearl Harbor qui devait accélérer les «changements révolutionnaires» au profit de l'hégémonie mondiale des États-Unis? Peut-être, si l'on prend en considération les événements qui se sont produits ensuite: ce crime permit aux États-Unis d'initier une «guerre contre le terrorisme» indéfinie à l'échelle planétaire; il leur fournit un prétexte pour bombarder et occuper l'Afghanistan, position stratégique en Asie centrale; il prépare la voie à l'agression contre l'Iraq; il autorise une augmentation spectaculaire des attributions de fonds à l'armée et aux services secrets; il permet l'adoption presque automatique de lois qui renforcent le pouvoirs policiers et réduisent les libertés des citoyens; et il renforce la popularité du président américain. Des hommes politiques israéliens, tel l'ancien premier ministre Netanyahu, parlent publiquement des conséquences «fastes» pour Israël des événements du 11 septembre 2001. Le fait que l'élite américaine en bénéficie n'implique pas nécessairement que le gouvernement américain soit responsable de méfaits en rapport. D'un autre côté, les perspectives ouvertes par ce crime, reconnues explicitement par les dirigeants américains et utilisées pour promouvoir les intérêts du pays, placent les États-Unis parmi les premiers suspects.

La liste des anomalies et tentatives de tromperie officielles est bien trop longue pour être envisagée complètement ici. Les événements du 11 septembre 2001 servant à justifier deux guerres d'agression, l'occupation de Afghanistan et de l'Irak, des menaces de nouvelles guerres, la réduction des libertés individuelles et l'affaiblissement de l'O.N.U., l'élucidation de ce crime est urgente et concerne tous les peuples. Si les autorités américaines ou des agences fédérales ont facilité la perpétration du crime, voire même l'ont organisé, avec ou sans l'aide d'étrangers, il sera nécessaire de faire face à cette terrible réalité et en tirer toutes les conséquences qui s'imposent. Tant que les autorités américaines refuseront de révéler la vérité sur ce qui s'est réellement produit le 11 septembre 2001, le gouvernement des États-Unis devra être considéré comme l'un des premiers suspects de cette tuerie massive.

September Song: A Review of "The New Pearl Harbor"

The New Pearl Harbor: Disturbing Questions about the Bush Administration and 9/11, David Ray Griffin, Olive Branch Press, 2004, Paper, 214 pp, $15.00

 

The official story goes something like this:

With no actionable warning from intelligence agencies, four planes were hijacked by terrorists on the morning of September 11, 2001. Two crashed into the Word Trade Center, which then collapsed, and shortly thereafter, the third into the Pentagon. The last plane went down in Pennsylvania after a struggle between passengers and hijackers. Air defense arrived too late to stop the catastrophes. Responding to this attack on the homeland, the president declared a global war on terror which may last for generations until evil is finally eradicated, the security of America firmly established, and the world made safe for freedom and democracy.

David Ray Griffin compiles the evidence that every single assertion in the official story is implausible or impossible, and that something other must explain the inconsistencies and contra-factual assertions.

The implications of the accumulated evidence is that the Bush administration was complicit in the events of September 11th, and not merely a victim of structural problems or incompetence on the part of the intelligence establishment. In a nuanced discussion of "complicity", Griffin distinguishes eight possible levels, from the lying about events to maximize political ends, through intentionally allowing expected attacks, to actual involvement in the planning of them.

Griffin does not make specific accusations, nor does he hypothesize a "true" version of what happened. But he does demand unflinching investigations of all the contradictions, clear reporting of the results, and most difficult, a courageous drawing of conclusions, no matter how "unthinkable" or outrageous they may appear.

In the months since the book was published, we have been swamped with news from the 9/11 Commission concerning both domestic and foreign intelligence which indicated a large and imminent attack on the United States. But the Commission, its members appointed by President Bush, is focussing on the future. According to Vice-Chair Lee Hamilton, "We're not interested in trying to assess blame..." Their goal is to understand what happened so as to restructure intelligence so that such "a breakdown" may not happen again. Given this limited mandate, almost none of the contradictions Griffin raises is likely to be discussed, or its ramifications analyzed before the case is closed.

The first part of The New Pearl Harbor looks in detail at the timeline and events of 9/11 itself. How is it, Griffin asks, that even the first airplane was not intercepted -- given standard procedures, operating normally many times a year, for off-course or otherwise anomalous aircraft? The FAA, NORAD, and the NMCC (National Military Command Center at the Pentagon) have a clear and working set of standard operating procedures which on September 11th, and on that day only, failed to operate. Griffin lays them out, along with the strange, and changing official excuses for their "failure".

The story becomes even more bizarre for the second plane to hit the WTC. By that time, it was known that three planes had been hijacked, and were heading back eastward (the fourth plane was 41 minutes late in taking off, so at this point was not part of the story). Still there was no normal scrambling of protective aircraft. By the time of the Pentagon incident, the details become grotesque. It was clear to the entire nation, fixed to the TV, that America was under a coordinated attack, and that a third plane was headed towards Washington. Yet though Cheney and Rice were evacuated to the White House bunker, still, no protection aircraft scrambled, and when it finally did, was sent from a base far from DC, travelling at half-maximum speed or less, arriving too late to prevent the attack.

With official statements compared to a detailed timeline of events, the most likely conclusion is that on that day, the air defense system was ordered to stand down from its normal protective procedures -- even after it was clear to all what was happening. Who could have ordered such a stand down?

Much of the material Griffin cites has been long circulated on the internet. What is less commonly understood are the strange details of the WTC collapse, implausibly explained as "jet-fuel fire melting structural steel." The pattern of destruction and fall is more consistent with the air attacks plus controlled demolitions. Griffin parses the material, with many notes from firefighting and architectural sources. Times, temperatures, visual and seismic evidence simply do not support the melting of steel as the sole cause of the observed failures. Further, what but explosions can account for reports of same from survivors, and for powdered concrete and building parts being ejected horizontally three times the width of the buildings? Steel in both towers was broken at the joints, and molten steel found at sub-basement levels -- inconsistent with melting from top floor fires whose debris crushed the floors below. The WTC wreckage was spirited away as quickly as possible and no forensics permitted.

Even more curious was the collapse of WTC Building 7 -- 355 feet away from the north tower, and further still from the south -- which was never hit by a plane or any significant amount of debris ,and sustained only small fires. It went down at 5:20PM, collapsing from the bottom (as in a typical controlled demolition), with none of the "official" explanations in play. The steel was removed quickly from this site as well, although having been evacuated, there were no survivors to be searched for. Relegated to a footnote is the fact that Marvin P. Bush, the president's younger brother, was a director for a security company involved in three of the four attacks. Securacom covered the WTC, United Airlines, -- whose flights hit the WTC and crashed in Pennsylvania -- and Dulles Airport -- from which the Pentagon flight took off. What are we to make of testimony from WTC personnel that five days before 9/11, heightened security requiring 12-hour days and bomb-sniffing dogs was abruptly called off? What committee will chase that down?

Griffin turns next to the strange story of the flight that struck the Pentagon. The physical evidence is simply inconsistent with the claim that the building was struck by a Boeing 757 travelling at 300+ mph. The hole in the façade is far too small to accommodate the wings and tail -- which were supposed to have disappeared within the hole. The penetration is far too shallow for the mass and momentum involved. Yet there is no scorching of the grass on the lawn outside. There is not the slightest sign of a burnt-out wreck in any photograph, nor were there any fuselage fragments recovered within the building. In the initial story, other then a beacon and the two black boxes -- these "discovered" at four the next morning -- every part of the plane, including the stainless steel engines, were melted, and vaporized. Nevertheless, in one version of the original tale, authorities were able to identify victims from their fingerprints. But six months later the story had changed and enough of the plane had been recovered to make possible "an almost complete reconstitution." The parts are supposedly stocked in a warehouse.

According to experienced pilots, the complex final maneuver of the huge aircraft could not have been accomplished by an amateur. The choice of a difficult low flying attack on a side wall, rather than crashing more easily into the roof -- for maximum damage -- was most curious. The plane's being "lost" from all radar contact for 29 minutes, while flying toward Washington is most improbable, given the network of radar and other resources covering the area. These contradictions, along with the failure to scramble in the most protected area of the world, make the official story of the Pentagon attack profoundly suspicious. And though Cheney and Rice were safely stowed in the White House bunker, and a plane was known to be heading in its direction, the Pentagon was never evacuated.

The last of the airplanes to go down was UA Flight 93, scene of the now famous passenger revolt: "Let's roll!" Here, the question is no longer "Why were the planes not shot down?" but rather "Why might it be the case that this one was?" CBS reported two F16s tailing the flight. Phone calls made from the plane during its last minutes reported possible success in overcoming the hijackers. One call reported, "I think they're going to do it. They're forcing their way into the cockpit...They're doing it! They're doing it! They're doing it!" Next, screaming in the background, followed by a "whooshing sound, a sound like wind." Then contact lost. The scenario is consistent with a plane being shot down. A half-ton piece of engine was found over a mile from the fuselage -- a likely target for a heat-seeking missile. Burning debris and human body parts were reported eight miles away, and confetti-like debris rained down minutes afterwards. One theory that would explain these departures from the official story is that Flight 93, unexpectedly late for departure, and unexpectedly rescued by its passengers, was destroyed by a competent military, in this case ordered to complete a bungled task. The risk of people left alive to be questioned may have been too great.

Griffin goes on to examine material that has been more generally covered -- at least in the left press and on many websites: the President's odd behavior on 9/11 given the timeline, and the evolving stories from the White House Press Office. He looks at the larger context of the event: the probable knowledge of possible attacks; the obstruction of investigations before and afterwards; the "anti-hunt" for bin Laden and al-Queda; the connections between Bush and the Saudi royal family; the flying of bin Ladens out of the country when no other aircraft was allowed to fly. We are familiar with much of this, though the details and citations are helpful. By now we are familiar, too, with the neo-con plans, pre-9/11, for projecting US power across the middle east and throughout central Asia. Asking the normal forensic question "Who benefits?", we can see that the Project For A New American Century" (2000) was well served by the "new Pearl Harbor" it called for.

After all the suspicious incongruities collected, we are left with two huge problems. Griffin leads us through them in a chapter entitled "Is Complicity by US Officials the Best Explanation for 9/11?":

1.Beyond showing that official explanations are implausible or impossible, how shall we construct a meaningful, alternative narrative which will contain and explain the known facts? For example, if it was not a Boeing 757 which crashed into the Pentagon, but a smaller military missile, where did the 757 go, and what happened to its passengers?

2. Most difficult of all, perhaps, is the question of how the administration -- if indeed it was complicit in 9/11 at some or several levels -- could be so incompetent at scripting a plausible story. Why not punish a few scapegoats in the intelligence community, instead of promoting those responsible for "lapses"? Why the needless, obvious lies, and continuingly changing statements? Why such massiveness to the conspiracy, requiring silence from many individuals in the White House, Justice Department, FBI, CIA, NSA, and the Pentagon, as well as in civilian security operations? Why risk demolition of buildings beyond the flight attacks? Why bring down WTC 7? Why order interceptor planes to stand down, and deny SOP readiness? Why have the president play unconcern for half an hour? So as not to upset second-graders? Why claim that human flesh could withstand temperatures which would vaporize stainless steel? There are better minds than Bush's who have been concocting covert operations for many years. Where were they? Or was it just this confounding of critics that was intended?

My one quibble with Griffin's most valuable compendium of unanswered questions is that the author nowhere examines and brings his judgement to bear on the many stories concerning Israeli and Mossad participation in the 9/11 events. But the book is a work-in-progress, necessarily incomplete.

Griffin can't put the pieces together. In this, he is honest, and calls on us to be the same. All he can do is call for more authentic investigations -- not the cover-ups currently underway -- to confront these crucial issues. And this, too, we must do.

In the context of 9/11, it also needs to be pointed out that Rabbi Dov Zakheim was Chief Executive Officer of System Planning Corporation's International Division, until President George W. Bush appointed him Undersecretary of Defense and Comptroller of the Pentagon.  Not long before Rabbi Zakheim rose to power over the Pentagon's labyrinthine, bottomless accounts, he co-authored an article entitled "Rebuilding America's Defenses: Strategy, Forces and Resources for a New Century" which was published by The Project for a New American Century in September 2000, exactly a year before 9/11.

On page 51 of this article, it is stated that "the process of transformation, even if it brings revolutionary change, is likely to be a long one, absent some catastrophic and catalyzing event - like a new Pearl Harbor"!  Voila! 9/11!  Well, there you have it! Motive, means and opportunity all rolled into one and existing between Rabbi Dov Zakheim's ears.  The motive was that a false flag intelligence operation would trigger a response by the USA that would be good for the Zionist state.

The means consisted of the aforementioned remote control of airborne vehicle technologies as well as the nurturing, creative accounting at the Pentagon to pay for such an operation.  The opportunity was Zakheim's closeness to the Command/ Control/ Communications in our nation's capital and its interwoven cousin network of psychopathic Zionist Neo-Cons all hell-bent on provoking a war with Saddam Hussein.  Unfortunately, it seems that the 9/11 commission is not looking in this direction when it ought to be.

The Pre-Demolition Demolition of Tower 2

 

Two demolition charges on the north side of Tower 2 exploded during the second plane crash, and it was all caught on tape. The first charge exploded completely, while the second charge did not fully eject. In the northeast camera view of the plane crash, you can only see the first charge, because the second charge did not explode out of the Tower. But, in the head-on view of the north face of Tower 2, you can see the second charge explode and then quickly retract. The two demolition charges were nowhere near the path of the incoming plane, and the first charge is visible before the plane even begins to explode.

The retired theologian, who taught religion for three decades at Claremont School of Theology, initially dismissed the notion that it was not an airliner that hit the Pentagon. But after visiting several Internet sites raising questions about the attack, he ended up writing a book. "The New Pearl Harbor," published in the spring, argues that a Boeing 757 would have caused far more damage and left more wreckage strewn around the Pentagon.

Quand je suis né ma mère, comme toutes les mères, voulait faire de moi le nouvel "Israël", le "premier homme véritablement homme" à l'échelle de son horizon spirituel. Adam est mon nom de baptême chrétien, et c'est la transposition du même rêve, à l'échelle de l'humanité.

Mais n'avez-vous pas été un sioniste convaincu dans votre jeunesse? D' ailleurs, avant 2001, vous étiez connu seulement comme journaliste spécialisé dans les questions internationales, non pour votre spiritualité. De quand date ce virage?

Oui, j'avais choisi de quitter la Russie dans l'adolescence, car je cherchais une cause juste à défendre, ce qui m'a amené en Israël. J'ai combattu dans l'armée israélienne dans la guerre de 1973.. Puis j'ai exercé le journalisme principalement en Russie, au Japon et en Angleterre. C'est le début de la deuxième Intifada qui m'a obligé à m'engager corps et âme, l'infamie de l'Etat hébreu m'a plongé dans un état d'urgence.

 

Vous appartenez donc à la lignée des penseurs d'origine juive qui va de Saint Paul à Simone Weil en passant par Bernard Lazare et Isaac Deutscher?

Ce sont pour moi de grands penseurs. Je vous rappelle que saint Jean de la Croix aussi avait une formation familiale juive. Saint Paul est le plus grand bâtisseur, précisément parce qu'il savait à quels ennemis il avait affaire, et qu'il a su déjouer leurs pièges!

 

L'Autre visage d'Israël, ce titre signifie-t-il que l'Etat d'Israël a deux faces, l'une d'ombre et l'autre de lumière?

Certainement pas; l'Etat d'Israël est une monstruosité juridique qui n'a aucun avenir. Il s'agit pour moi de démanteler l'appareillage idéologique qui vous fait imaginer autre chose. Mais vous avez le droit de dire que mes lecteurs et moi représentons un autre pôle, une humanité en résurrection, ce que la langue des hébreux appelait Israël.

 

Et le sous-titre "Fleurs de Galilée"?

Ce livre s'est construit à partir des articles que m'inspirait l'actualité, sur le terrain physique de l'Intifada. J'ai une tendresse sans bornes pour la Galilée et son humilité, ses paysages, ses sources, ses tombeaux, ses paysans, et pour Le Galiléen.

 

Vous êtes donc un Palestinien d'adoption?

Tous les habitants de la Terre Sainte éprouvent le rayonnement extraordinaire de ce centre du monde. Natifs de Palestine ou immigrants, nous devons assumer loyalement ce lien vital; les juifs y sont déjà très imprégnés du goût palestinien, et je suis entré dans l'Eglise palestinienne, qui appartient au christianisme orthodoxe, celui qui convient au monde oriental.

 

Et vous ne croyez pas que le gouvernement israélien concède un jour l'indépendance aux Palestiniens, même sur quelques lambeaux de terre?

L'Etat juif refuse de se donner une constitution et des frontières, et c'est un occupant sans aucune légitimité: les Palestiniens ne sont pas dupes de leurs manouvres de diversion. L'Etat juif disparaîtra dès que l'Occident cessera de subventionner systématiquement son armée, aux moyens exorbitants.

 

La troisième partie de votre livre s'intitule "Les maîtres du discours". Qui sont-ils?

L'Etat d'Israël n'existe que pour satisfaire les projets d'un petit groupe de gens, résidant principalement aux Etats-Unis, qui grâce à leurs moyens financiers, imposent un discours biaisé qui ne laisse pas émerger une parole authentique. Leur but est l'emprise matérielle et spirituelle, et l'enjeu de la Palestine est vital pour eux.

 

Vous parlez du "devoir de dire ce que l'on croit juste"; vous n'avez donc pas peur?

 Moi, jamais! Je suis un bon vivant et je mets ma confiance en la Mère de Dieu.

 

Mais votre spiritualité, précisément, fait que vous êtes apparemment mieux défendu par des gens de droite que par la gauche?

Les termes de gauche et droite n'ont plus aucun sens de nos jours. La guerre d'Irak a permis l'émergence d'un front où se retrouvent tous les résistants cohérents au projet israélo-américain, contre tous ceux qui ménagent les intérêts sionistes.

 

Vous ne croyez donc pas que le terrorisme soit un phénomène en grande partie islamique, et qu'il menace nos pays de culture judéo-chrétienne?

Il existe un terrorisme judaïque, celui qui est pratiqué tous les jours en Palestine, et qui fomente en secret de nombreux attentats de par le monde, qui seront attribués automatiquement à des musulmans. Nous devons absolument retrouver les bases théologiques qui unissent chrétiens et musulmans, et nous dissocier des judaïsants!

 

Vous écrivez en anglais. Etes-vous lu dans d'autres langues?

J'ai choisi d'écrire en anglais pour mieux participer à l'Intifada mondiale. Cela me permet d'être lu en temps réel sur le web dans le monde entier, et de rencontrer ainsi très vite mes lecteurs naturels, les résistants à ce que j'appelle le "ZOG", le gouvernement d'occupation sioniste à l'échelle mondiale. Mon livre est désormais traduit et publié dans la plupart des langues européennes.

 

Quelle solution prônez-vous pour la question palestinienne?

Il n'y a qu'une solution: un seul état laïque et démocratique pour tous les habitants de la Palestine historique; actuellement nous avons, comme le dit Marwan Barghouti, un Etat démocratique pour les juifs, et un Etat juif pour les autres, c'est à dire raciste, tout simplement. C'était le modèle de l' Afrique du Sud, et on en est venu à bout. L'autre Visage d'Israël est un livre qui s'arrête juste avant l'invasion de l'Irak. Quel sera le prochain?

Tout ce que j'annonçais dans ce livre a été confirmé au cours de l'année écoulée. J'y ai éclairci des points mal connus de l'histoire du sionisme et des relations politiques entre juifs et chrétiens, une tradition qui conduit les Etats-Unis à attaquer le monde entier, par étapes, puis au désastre, comme nous le voyons maintenant déjà en Irak. Mon prochain livre approfondit les racines théologiques de la guerre planétaire, autre domaine méconnu et censuré. L'Espagne la première a su exprimer spontanément ce que toute l'Europe rejette, et l'imposer à sa classe dirigeante. Nous vaincrons par l'esprit!

Entre la "guerre juive" et le "complot américano-sioniste"

 Le négationniste Serge Thion, ravi de la nouvelle conjoncture "antiguerre", où l’antisionisme de propagande fusionne avec un antiaméricanisme mystique, écrit dans le numéro 16, paru en janvier 2003, de sa revue, La Gazette du Golfe et des banlieues, à propos de la "composition" de "l’équipe Bush": "On peut se demander légitimement, si ce ne sont pas des Juifs israéliens ou pro-israéliens qui dirigent le gouvernement américain". Le 10 avril 2003, paraît le numéro 20 de ce périodique caricaturalement haineux, "antisioniste" autant qu’américanophobe. On y lit, en guise d’avertissement au lecteur: "Née en 1991, de la révolte contre la guerre imposée par les pétroliers américains, elle [La Gazette] [...] avait paru sans périodicité fixe. Ranimée par l’éclatant retour de l’impérialisme américain dévoilé par la divine surprise du 11 septembre, elle avait adopté un rythme mensuel sans en faire un dogme. Le dernier numéro, 19, paru après le déclenchement de la guerre par le quarteron des néo-cons sionistes qui agitent la marionnette boucharde, a été submergé et distendu par le flot de l’actualité."  D’abréviation usuelle pour "neo-conservatives", l’expression "neocons", en langue française, se transforme subrepticement en terme insultant. Un certain Christophe Deroubaix, dans le quotidien communiste L’Humanité, après avoir affirmé que "Bush applique, les unes après les autres, les idées des "neocons"", présente ainsi Paul Wolfowitz, "l’éminence grise": "Le véritable chef de la bande des "neocons", c’est lui...". Voilà qui doit faire beaucoup ricaner, dans les troupes clairsemées des néostaliniens.

Israël Shamir Le 20 mars 2003, dans la lettre d’information (diffusée sur Internet) de l’Association médicale franco-palestinienne (AMFP, Marseille), Point d’information Palestine, on pouvait lire un texte judéophobe et conspirationniste signé Israël Shamir, "Les oreilles de Midas", dénonçant violemment les "magnats juifs des médias" et la "juiverie organisée" (Organised Jewry), celle-ci étant par lui accusée d’être aujourd’hui responsable de la "guerre en Irak", comme elle aurait, d’une façon occulte, naguère, après avoir "acheté secrètement et subverti les médias français durant de nombreuses années", précipité les Français "dans l’horrible et totalement inutile Seconde Guerre mondiale". Ainsi parle Israël Shamir, l’un de ces Juifs antijuifs qui, s’affirmant "antisionistes", sont devenus des intellectuels organiques de la "cause palestinienne" et se sont rapprochés des milieux négationnistes ("notre ami Israël Shamir": c’est ainsi que Serge Thion, l’ex-bras droit de Robert Faurisson, le présente sur son site, avant de diffuser l’un de ses articles). Shamir affirme que "les Juifs", qu’il oppose aux "gens normaux", "règnent en maîtres en Amérique", et précise son accusation: "La juiverie organisée ne cesse de pousser à la guerre tout en déniant toute prise de position et tout engagement en la matière". Cet "antisioniste" militant enchaîne en posant la question rhétorique suivante: "Est-il totalement impensable que les Juifs américains aient pris secrètement le contrôle de leurs médias nationaux et soient aujourd’hui en train de précipiter les États-Unis dans une horrible et totalement inutile Troisième Guerre mondiale?" La prescription s’impose: "Faisons en sorte que les conseillers juifs du président Bush soient virés. Ces comploteurs sont incapables de tenir ce qu’ils ont promis [...] Ils ont poussé le bouchon trop loin." Les articles "antisionistes" de Shamir sont disponibles sur des sites négationnistes, islamistes et pro-palestiniens. Un des articles disponibles sur le site <http://www.solidarite-palestine.org se termine par cette prophétie, fondée sur la christification des Palestiniens: "Même si l’on crucifie tous les Palestiniens jusqu’au dernier sur le Golgotha, l’état juif d’Israël n’a d’autre réalité que virtuelle et ne verra jamais le jour." Dans un autre article, daté de septembre 2002, diffusé sur le site du Parti des Musulmans de France (PMF), au début de février 2003, Shamir écrit: "Les élites juives américaines poussent à l’Armageddon [...] afin de placer l’état juif au sommet de la hiérarchie mondiale. C’est le plan d’un mégalomane, mais ce sont des mégalomanes qui sont aux manettes de la superpuissance mondiale unique." On comprend dès lors pourquoi Shamir, récusant le projet politique fondé sur la coexistence des deux états, l’un juif, et l’autre palestinien, est un ferme partisan du démantèlement de l’état d’Israël en vue de créer un nouvel état, déjudaïsé, incluant Juifs et Palestiniens. Sur ce même site, où le président du PMF, Mohamed Ennacer Latrèche, dénonce inlassablement "le plan américano-sioniste", on lit, à la fin d’un communiqué de presse du PMF, daté du 20 octobre 2002: "Le PMF adresse au peuple irakien et à son président ses meilleurs vœux de bonheur et de prospérité, tout en lui assurant son entier soutien dans sa résistance aux projets dévastateurs américano-sionistes."

SHAMIR EXISTE-T-IL?

Le Mythe de Shamir

En quelques années de publication d’articles d’Israël Shamir dans Zavtra, notre journal a reçu plus de dix kilogrammes de lettres et des mégabytes de courriers électroniques démontrant avec application et conviction, de diverses manières convergentes et sur tous les tons qu’une personne (telle Israël Shamir) n’existe pas, et ne saurait exister.

Une fois compilés, cela nous donne au moins vingt-sept arguments plaidant contre l’existence de Shamir. Il y eut des déconstructions et des réfutations, de subtils sophismes, des preuves par l’absurde, des analyses factorielles comparées, des déconstructions du contenu, des vœux et des dénonciations, des exhibitions et des objurgations qu’enfin, la vérité soit avouée.

Ces lettres bien réelles avec timbre et adresse de l’expéditeur, nous incitaient à penser que leurs auteurs étaient des personnes en chair et en os, dont l’existence ne saurait être mise en doute. C’est pourquoi nous commençâmes nous-mêmes à douter de l’existence de Shamir. Plus nous recevions de lettres, plus nos doutes s’accroissaient. Et si c’était notre rédacteur en chef, Prokhanov, qui écrivait tous ces articles anti-Shamir, sous le pseudo de Shamir, comme l’affirmaient, par centaines, nos honorables correspondants? Un juif ne saurait écrire ce que Shamir écrit au sujet des juifs. A moins que...?

De plus, certains facteurs ne faisaient qu’ajouter à notre confusion. Primo, l’incroyable étendue des centres d’intérêt de cet improbable auteur nommé "Israël Shamir". Elle était scandaleuse, oppressive; on ne pouvait qu’être soit charmé par son érudition, soit considérer qu’en réalité il s’agissait d’un collectif d’auteurs se camouflant derrière ce pseudo. De fait, ce Shamir, il est partout: et que je te traduise Joyce et Homère, et que je te vive au Japon, et que je te travaille à la BBC, et que je te guerroie contre les Arabes et contre les services secrets soviétiques. C’est à la fois un sioniste et un antisémite, un socialiste et un érudit ès Talmud. On se décide, là? Voilà beaucoup trop d’érudition, pour un seul homme!

De temps à autre, Shamir faisait son apparition, au siège de Zavtra, soulevant un surcroît de questions embarrassantes par son allure. Pas tout jeune, mais vigoureux, félin, mais fatigué, le cuir tanné comme un Noir, les cheveux frisés (voir plus haut), à la fois tenace et contemplatif, facétieux et profond, semblable à Prokhanov et néanmoins différent, Shamir boit sa vodka en grignotant une rondelle de concombre, il parle un russe parfait, mais avec l’accent juif; il sourit parfois, d’un air coupable, comme s’il n’était pas très assuré de son identité. A notre première rencontre, je le pris pour un Cubain. Lui ayant demandé: " Etes-vous Shamir ", il m’avait répondu: " Oui! "; mais cela n’avait fait qu’augmenter mes doutes. Afin de les dissiper, j’ai étudié sa biographie. On peut la trouver sur le " Premier site non-officiel, en russe, d’Israël Shamir ". En effet, avec Shamir, un site " officiel " ne saurait exister. La voici:

" Guide touristique, interprète, journaliste et écrivain, Shamir est né à Novossibirsk, en 1947. Diplômé de la prestigieuse Ecole Supérieure de Physique et de Mathématiques d’Akademgorodok, il a étudié les mathématiques à l’université de Novossibirsk et le droit à la Faculté de Droit de Sverdlovsk. Encore étudiant, il devint l’ami de plusieurs dissidents. Encore étudiant en droit à Sverdlovsk, il écrivit une Déclaration des droits et des libertés de l’Homme en URSS, ce qui lui valut d’être exclu de l’université. Cela ne fit que renforcer sa détermination à consacrer sa vie à une juste cause. A la fin des années 1960, Shamir rencontra des sionistes, à Moscou (lesquels tenaient Shamir en grande estime en raison de son expérience dans le domaine des médias libres (samizdat) et de ses compétences conspiratrices), et il devint actif au sein du mouvement sioniste. En 1968, il manifesta contre l’agression soviétique en Tchécoslovaquie, et ne tarda pas à émigrer en Israël où il fut soldat dans une unité de parachutistes. Il participa à la guerre d’octobre 1973. Après la guerre, il poursuivit ses études de droit à l’Université hébraïque de Jérusalem. Toutefois, le sort décida que sa carrière de juriste devait s’arrêter là. Mais il se réalisa complètement en tant que journaliste et écrivain.

Israël se fit les dents, en matière de journalisme, à la radio israélienne. Ensuite, il fut un journaliste free lance, et il se rendit fréquemment dans des " points chauds " du Globe, tels le Vietnam, le Laos ou le Cambodge. En 1975, il partit pour Londres et travailla à la BBC. Entre 1977 et 1979, il vécut au Japon, invité par la radiodiffusion nippone...

Dès les années 1970, Shamir commença à perdre ses illusions sur le sionisme, à cause de la discrimination à l’encontre des non-juifs en Israël. L’Etat juif lui rappelait la Russie stalinienne, et cela ralluma en lui le flambeau de la contestation. C’est pourquoi, rentré en Israël, en 1980, Shamir rentra aussi en politique. Il fut attaché de presse du parti socialiste israélien (Mapam), et il écrivit des articles pour le quotidien Ha’aretz. Il traduisit Agnon (lauréat du prix Nobel de littérature) ainsi que le roman Ulysse de Joyce. Son œuvre la plus connue est intitulée (en russe) Sosna y Oliva [Le Pin et l’olivier]. C’est un ouvrage historique consacré à la Palestine et au conflit arabo-israélien. Il a été publié en 1988. Dans ce livre, Shamir condamne sans appel la politique agressive et criminelle d’Israël à l’encontre des Palestiniens. Durant la période 1989-1993, il est retourné en Russie, où il travaille comme correspondant du quotidien Ha’aretz. Au début de son séjour, il fut enchanté de la perestroïka, mais la politique étrangère soviétique, révisée par la perestroïka, l’inquiétait beaucoup, en raison de sa forte tendance pro-américaine. A l’époque, il écrivit ses articles aussi controversés que bien connus, dans la Pravda, Nash Sovremennik, Den’ et Zavtra (sous le nom d’emprunt de Robert David), dans lesquels il défendait l’argument que la politique étrangère soviétique était la meilleure possible, pour l’Union soviétique et pour le tiers-monde. Il condamna Eltsine et son entourage après le bombardement du parlement russe, qu’il qualifia d’ "illégitime et illégal".

Rapidement, grâce aux recommandations de deux écrivains que tout semblait opposer, Lev Anninski (de gauche) et Stanislav Kunïaev (de droite), Shamir fut admis à la prestigieuse Union des Écrivains Russes. En 1993, il retourna en Israël et s’installa à Jaffa. Non content de ses nombreux articles publiés par des journaux israéliens et russes, il traduisit en russe l’Odyssée d’Homère, qui fut publiée, en l’an 2000, à St Pétersbourg. Son projet, pour l’avenir, était (peut-être l’est-il encore?) de traduire un manuscrit talmudique du quinzième siècle en anglais. Dans ses articles les plus récemment publiés, Israël Shamir fait la critique de la gauche israélienne et de sa "solution" à deux États (consistant à partager la Palestine entre un État arabe et État juif). " [Fin de la biographie du site non-officiel].

Au début du vingtième siècle, un tel juif ardent aurait pu exister; nous pouvons l’imaginer, dans le contexte de l’époque: sa soif de grandeur, ses rêves de vie bien remplie et de mort héroïque; sa fuite d’un schtetl ennuyeux comme la pluie vers la grande capitale, les cercles révolutionnaires, le tourbillon humain; le vent de la révolution aurait soufflé sa chaude haleine sur son front tempétueux et bouclé; les calomnies, la cavale, l’exil; des batailles décisives et des victoires; des plans grandioses concernant tant le Ciel que la terre et la confrontation mondiale; des grandes déclarations et des meetings, des efforts sauvages au travail; des frictions précoces, des désaccords, la résignation; des défis lancés et une mort affreuse – ou alors la réconciliation et une longue vieillesse paisible quelque part au bord du fleuve Amour, parmi les collines, si belles, en septembre... Mais une vie comme la sienne... aujourd’hui?! Impossible! Cette biographie soulève bien plus de questions qu’elle n’apporte de réponses.

Et ce sont bien les écrits de cet auteur, eux-mêmes, qui créent plus que toute autre chose de la confusion. Les Russes sont fort enclins à critiquer la Russie, et les lecteurs justifient leurs prises de position en invoquant, au choix, les torts éternels de la Russie, l’âme non-russe des critiques russes, ou les deux... Mais quand un juif, baigné dans la Bible et le Talmud critique non seulement l’Etat d’Israël, mais encore le concept même de " peuple juif "... Alors là, le monde familier autour de nous s’écroule, et la situation requiert une ré-interprétation immédiate.

Le mot "traître" est celui qui revient le plus souvent dans la pile de lettres que nous avons reçues, dont les auteurs, recourant aux strictes règles de la logique, arguent simultanément de la trahison par Shamir de la cause juive ET de l’impossibilité qu’il existe en tant que personne. Ils haïssent quelqu’un qui, à leur avis, n’a jamais existé. Mais ce n’est là que l’interprétation la plus simple...

Bien sûr, dans l’histoire et dans la littérature, nous connaissons d’autres cas similaires – l’aveugle Borgès, dans son Histoire d’un combattant et d’un prisonnier argue avec quelque persuasion du "désir obscur des cœurs de dépasser tous les pourquoi?" et de la différence stupéfiante qui peut exister entre trahison et révélation, entre un renégat et un néophyte.

Mais, dans le cas de Shamir, il ne s’agit pas de trahison, puisqu’on ne sait pas qui est le véritable traître: Shamir, l’Etat d’Israël, ou la juiverie mondiale?

Depuis nos leçons de philosophie, nous connaissons tous le sophisme au sujet de ce Crétois qui décrète que tous les Crétois sont des menteurs. Tous les étudiants ne réussissaient pas à s’extirper de ce cercle vicieux. Les textes de Shamir professent qu’un " Etat juif " est une impropriété et que le " peuple juif " n’est pas une réalité, mais une idée abstraite. La présence de Shamir au monde élève cette hypothèse au niveau d’un théorème démontré. Si un non-juif écrivait cela, ce serait un menteur. Mais si un juif l’écrit, alors Israël (l’Etat...) est fondé sur un mensonge et les juifs, tels que nous les connaissons, n’existent pas. Ainsi, nous sommes confrontés à un choix difficile: soit c’est Shamir qui n’existe pas, soit c’est Israël. Et qui sait qui l’emportera? Si l’on admet l’existence d’Israël (Shamir), alors on doit douter de l’existence d’Israël (l’Etat).

Ou alors, peut-être Shamir est-il le seul juif réellement existant actuellement et que les Berezovski, Soros, Wolfowitz et Rabinovich, on ne sait pas très bien QUI ils sont. Peut-être le véritable Etat d’Israël essaie-t-il de se manifester au monde par l’intermédiaire de Shamir, au quel cas les Sharon ne sont que des empêcheurs de tourner en rond? Peut-être les juifs n’existent-ils pas, et Shamir, après l’avoir démontré, est-il d’ores et déjà en train de se dissoudre dans la vibrante canicule palestinienne? Shamir ne dira sûrement pas s'il est existe réellement. Il aimerait sans doute dire qu’il n’existe pas, et que, comme disait Joyce: "Je ne suis pas moi, dès lors que toutes mes molécules ont changé".

Nouvelle crispation sur l'uranium iranien, tout en oubliant l'israélien

Lorsque j'entends le chef de la diplomatie française, Michel Barnier affirmer "Nous restons vivement préoccupés par le développement du programme nucléaire iranien. Toute course aux armements aurait des conséquences incalculables dans cette région et dans le monde"... Je me permets de lui répondre: "Il y a un autre endroit dans cette région qui est encore plus dangereux; car là nous sommes assurés de trouver toutes sortes d'armes de destruction massive. Et puis, comme toujours, dès qu'il s'agit de sanctionner la course aux armements, vous oubliez curieusement le pays qui, avec ses armes nucléaires tient en otage tout le monde arabe: Israël. Êtes-vous brusquement devenu aveugle ou sourd, Monsieur le Ministre, pour vous focaliser uniquement sur l'Iran?"

J'entends aussi dire que tout le monde a perdu patience. La France, le Royaume-Uni et l'Allemagne emboîtant le pas à l'oncle Sam ont annoncé le 13 septembre qu'ils avaient déposé à L'agence internationale de l'énergie atomique (AIEA) un projet de résolution donnant à Téhéran jusqu'à novembre pour faire la lumière sur son programme nucléaire. Là aussi je me permets de poser la question: "Vous oubliez volontairement le programme nucléaire d'Israël, alors que là ce n'est même plus la peine de chercher des bombes ou des missiles, nous sommes tout à fait assurés de les trouver". L'ex-technicien nucléaire Mordecchaï Vanunu, emprisonné durant 18 ans et libéré récemment avait révélé au monde entier les secrets nucléaires d'Israël, dans une série d'articles publiés par le Sunday Times des 5 et 12 octobre 1986. Tout le monde savait qu'Israël fabriquait une centaine d'ogives nucléaires dans le complexe nucléaire de Dimona planqué dans le désert du Néguev, ayant plusieurs étages souterrains.

Ces ogives ont certainement triplé ou quadruplé depuis lors puisque personne, ni dans la région, ni parmi les pays "qui prétendaient que l'Irak possédait des armes de destruction massive" ne s'en est inquiété. Le silence officiel, le mutisme de l'AIEA et des différents organismes de contrôle de l'armement nucléaire, dont la COCOVINU (commission de contrôle, de vérification et d'inspection des Nations Unies) celui de la presse spécialisée, reste à ce jour total sur l'armement israélien. Alors, comment pourrions-nous les croire lorsqu'ils dénoncent l'Iran?

L'usine est bien cachée dans le désert et produit des ogives nucléaires depuis 1966. Entre-temps, elle a certainement, d'après certains articles échappés dans une certaine presse israélienne, fabriqué des armes thermonucléaires d'une capacité suffisante pour détruire des villes entières. Selon des sources israéliennes vers le milieu des années soixante, des physiciens et des techniciens de Dimona ont accompli, au moins, un essai nucléaire de faible puissance dans une caverne souterraine du désert du Néguev près de la frontière israélo-égyptienne. Il semble que la déflagration ait ébranlé certaines parties du Mont Sinaï. (Operation Samson par Seymour M. Hersch paru en 1992). Selon Vanunu, une usine d'extraction de plutonium, équipée du système français a transformé Dimona d'établissement de recherche en usine de production de bombes. La production de plutonium se situait dans les années 1986 de 40 kg par an, suffisamment pour produire 10 bombes.

Les preuves, ainsi que les photographies apportées par Vanunu avaient surpris le monde entier ainsi que les experts en armement nucléaire car elles avaient démontré qu'Israël était devenu, en toute impunité, une puissance nucléaire. Tout en développant des techniques sophistiquées et hautement spécialisées, cet État a construit un redoutable arsenal nucléaire. Théodore Taylor, un des experts américains les plus compétents avait estimé que le témoignage de Vanunu donnait à penser qu'Israël avait la capacité de produire 10 bombes atomiques par an, sensiblement plus petites, plus légères, et plus efficaces que les premiers types de bombes mis au point par les cinq grandes puissance nucléaires.

Nous sommes tout à fait d'accord avec le Ministre, les représentants de l'AIEA, ainsi que tous ceux qui dénoncent la course aux armements dans cette région et c'est aussi pour cela, qu'en association avec les pacifistes et écologistes de la région, nous appelons au désarmement d'Israël afin de construire un Moyen-Orient dénucléarisé et débarrassé des armes de destruction massive.

Petite note de la Gazette: A lire les journaux, ce secret de Polichinelle reste une valeur stable. De vagues "experts" se bornent à "estimer" qu'Israël dispose de 200 têtes nucléaires. Or il serait facile de montrer que ce chiffre est resté le même depuis 20 ans. Au moment de l'affaire Vanunu (il vient de sortir de taule après 18 ans!) c'était déjà l'estimation "généralement admise". Or chacun sait qu'on n'arrête pas les usines de production de charges nucléaires. Il faudrait des années pour les remettre en route si le "besoin" se faisait sentir. Par conséquent, toutes les armées gardent des unités de production en état de marche, même dans les périodes de désarmement.

Il est donc plus que certain que Dimona a continué à fournir du plutonium militaire. On doit estimer au minimum la quantité de têtes nucléaires disponibles à 500, sinon plus. La pudeur des journalistes a quelque chose de lamentable.

LE JUDÉOFASCISME TOUJOURS VIRULENT

La librairie "Au Pays de Cocagne" attaquée par les nervis du Betar

 

 L'écrivain Alain Soral signait tranquillement son dernier roman Misères du désir, ce soir 28 septembre à 19 heures à la librairie AU PAYS DE COCAGNE, 117 rue Vieille du Temple, dans le quartier du Marais, lorsqu'une bande de vingt à trente nervis casqués, tenant des matraques, a déboulé, fracassant les vitres, démolissant la porte et saccageant le magasin. Ils ont cogné comme des fous sur les personnes présentes

 Il y avait environ vingt personnes dans la librairie, dont plusieurs clients ainsi qu'une dizaine attendant devant la porte   Nous avons pu prévenir les gens qui attendaient dehors. Malheureusement, ceux qui étaient à l'intérieur ont eu à subir l'assaut éclair de ces dégénérés, avant que le store métallique ne soit tiré

Il y a eu plusieurs blessés, huit au total, saignant abondamment, surtout des femmes. Une fillette a également été blessée ainsi que les deux jeunes libraires d'origine grecque qui venaient d'ouvrir leur magasin, il y a quatre mois. Les gens ont été touchés par les éclats de verre et par les coups de matraques

 C'était atroce, une véritable attaque aux cris "Israël vaincra". Comment imaginer, qu'à Paris, dans un quartier commerçant comme celui du Marais, en plein jour, une milice connue pour ses exactions ait pu saccager une librairie et massacrer des clients?

 Alain Soral, qui a reçu le soutien de Dieudonné venu sur les lieux, a heureusement échappé à cette ratonnade. Il nous a dit qu'il se savait menacé suite à l'émission "Complément d'Enquête", sur Antenne 2, car il avait reçu plusieurs menaces de mort sur son site ou par téléphone. Il n'a pas voulu annuler la présentation de son livre qui était annoncée depuis un certain temps, car il n'avait pas pour habitude de se laisser intimider. Par contre, il avait demandé la protection de la police qui ne la lui a pas accordée

 Tout le monde se retrouva dans la cour, après l'assaut, sous le choc, et toussant à qui mieux mieux à cause des gaz lacrymogène; une jeune femme algérienne qui était entrée pour acheter Les Contemplations de Victor Hugo avait une crise de nerfs et criait "non, non, pas en France! Pas ça, je n'aurais jamais cru ça!"

 Les deux jeunes libraires effondrées, l'une couverte de sang et le visage tuméfié, demandaient: "Mais où sont donc les juifs normaux? Est-ce qu'il il n'y a pas de juifs normaux dans ce quartier?"

 Les policiers semblaient aussi douter qu'il y ait des juifs normaux dans ce quartier. Effectivement, lorsque les télés ont voulu interviewer Alain Soral devant la vitrine totalement fracassée de la librairie, dans la rue, les policiers ont refusé, expliquant qu'ils ne pouvaient pas assurer sa sécurité au beau milieu de la rue.

 Les malfaiteurs sont repartis comme ils étaient venus..

Il est inadmissible que des nervis sionistes s'en prennent à un magasin tenu par deux jeunes femmes étrangères, et que la police, à qui l'auteur Alain Soral avait demandé une protection, n'ait rien fait pour protéger ces femmes désarmées, tant moralement que physiquement.

 Ce n'est donc plus seulement en banlieue, que les femmes doivent s'assurer elles-mêmes le service de gardes du corps pour exercer une profession honorable? Est-ce que par hasard les femmes libres n'ont plus le droit de vendre des livres différents dans certains quartiers de Paris?

Premier baratin sioniste: celui de Johan Weisz, spécialiste de la calomnie vicelarde contre les antisionistes:

Un commando, vraisemblablement de « La Ligue de Défense juive », a légèrement blessé au visage six personnes mardi 28 septembre au soir, alors qu'elles se trouvaient à la librairie « Au pays de Cocagne » (Paris 3e): l'écrivain Alain Soral - membre du comité de soutien d'«Euro-Palestine» et qui dialogue avec l'ultra-droite du « Bloc identitaire » et la «Nouvelle Droite» - était venu dédicacer ses ouvrages. Michaël Carslisle, responsable européen de la « Ligue de Défense Juive », dément cependant toute responsabilité dans l'agression, mais ajoute « comprendre que d'autres juifs aient eu l'envie de s'en prendre à un antisémite ».

[Ce genre de dénégation est classique. Quand trois jeunes brutes ont essayé d'assassiner Robert Faurisson à coups de pieds, à Vichy, le sinistre Klarsfeld, à Paris, se frottait la panse en disant: je comprends ces jeunes gens... C'était lui qui les avaient envoyés...]

C'est peu après 19 heures qu'un groupe d'une trentaine d'hommes ont pénétré dans la librairie, en criant «Israël vaincra! . Armés de matraques télescopiques et, pour certains, le visage recouvert de foulards, ces hommes âgés d'une vingtaine d'années ont brisé la vitrine de l'établissement, renversé les étalages de livres et frappé les personnes présentes, parmi lesquelles des employés. Les agresseurs sont restés «à peine plus de deux minutes sur les lieux», selon un témoin. La police est arrivée cinq minutes après les faits.

« La soirée de signature d'Alain Soral était prévue avant l'été », a expliqué la directrice de la librairie, soit bien avant la diffusion, sur France 2, de l'émission « Compléments d'enquête » consacrée le 20 septembre à l'antisémitisme au cours de laquelle il avait évoqué «une psychopathologie du judaïsme sionisme qui confine à la maladie mentale».

Le président du Parti des Musulmans de France, Mohamed Latrèche ou encore Ginette Skandrani, co-éditrice du «Manifeste judéo-nazi d'Ariel Sharon», assistaient à la soirée de dédicace d'Alain Soral, qui n'a pas été blessé pendant l'incident. Selon la directrice de la librairie, Alain Soral aurait été averti de la présence d'un groupe hostile en contre-bas de la rue quelques minutes avant l'agression. Il aurait souhaité que la soirée se poursuive sans fermer le rideau de fer de la librairie. «Il a eu son coup médiatique», a-t-elle affirmé.

Cet idiot de Weisz a confondu Latrèche et Dieudonné. Bah! tous des nègres, après tout! Un témoin de la préparation de l'assaut, dans la rue, a entendu ces humanistes juifs dire: "Même les femmes et les gosses on les défonce". On se croirait déjà en Israël.

La chronologie:

Lundi 20 septembre 2004.

Lors de son émission "Complément d'enquête" consacrée à l'antisémitisme en France, France 2 diffuse une séquence tentant de démonter le discours antisémite de Dieudonné. Aux côtés de ce dernier, se tient celui qui semble se révéler comme étant son mentor: l'écrivain sulfureux Alain Soral.

Quelques secondes de son discours suffisent à camper le personnage chez qui le trop plein de haine le fait vociférer, toutes jugulaires saillantes:

"Quand avec un Français, Juif sioniste, tu commences à dire: Y'a peut-être des problèmes qui viennent de chez vous. Vous avez peut-être fait quelques erreurs. C'est pas systématiquement la faute de l'autre, totalement, si personne peut vous blairer partout où vous mettez les pieds. Parce qu'en gros, c'est à peu près ça leur histoire, tu vois. Ça fait quand même 2500 ans que chaque fois qu'y mettent les pieds quelque part, y se font dérouiller. Hein! Tout de même faut se dire: c'est bizarre, c'est que tout l'monde a toujours tort sauf eux". [C'est exactement ce que disait, en bon français, Bernard Lazare!]

L'auteur de ces propos nauséabonds est sans doute allé trop loin, puisque de nombreuses portes vont se fermer à lui, même parmi ceux avec qui il partage un anti-sionisme forcené, à l'instar du site Euro-Palestine qui, tout en soutenant indéfectiblement Dieudonné, déclarera dans un monument d'hypocrisie:

 

" ... nous tenons à signaler à tous ceux qui n'ont pu voir l'émission que Alain Soral y a tenu des propos choquants, que nous dénonçons... "

 

Précisons, à ce propos, que Benoît Duquesne, qui a réalisé l'émission, interrogé le 2 octobre par "Le Médiateur de France 2", a signalé qu'Alain Soral avait mis au défi l'équipe de tournage de diffuser son interview, déclarant notamment que "les médias dirigés par des Juifs s'opposeraient certainement à la diffusion de son interview", et que "si les journalistes le faisaient, ils étaient à peu près sûrs de perdre leur travail".

La diffusion eut bien lieu et, dès le lendemain, il en a fait le reproche à la chaîne publique, se plaignant également auprès de l'AFP que ses propos avaient été tronqués, ce qui est formellement démenti par Benoît Duquesne.

 

Mardi 28 septembre 2004.

Soral, qui aime tant qu'on l'aime, voit son aura et sa présence médiatique décroître, pestiféré depuis huit jours. Lui qui se targue d'être "toujours du côté des opprimés, des hommes seuls", le voilà lui-même rejeté par ceux qui le trouvent, somme toute, bien encombrant.

Pourtant, en ce mardi 28 septembre, Soral se rend imperturbablement à une séance de dédicaces de son dernier livre à la librairie "Au Pays de Cocagne". Elle démarre à 19 heures précises.

A 19h05, des incidents éclatent et les témoins présents décrivent "une meute de vingt à trente personnes casquées et armées de matraques et de bâtons" qui auraient investi les lieux, saccagé la librairie, asséné des coups violents aux participants de la soirée, aux cris de "Israël vivra!", "Israël vaincra!".

La scène est filmée et consultable sur le site d'Alain Soral. On peut se rendre compte que les supposés agresseurs ne sont jamais visibles ni audibles sur cette vidéo.

Moins de deux heures plus tard, dès 21 heures, France-Infos relate les faits tels que rapportés par les témoins, sans jamais utiliser le conditionnel.

Les questions:

Le Betar et la LDJ (Ligue de Défense Juive) - unanimement montrés du doigt et supposés responsables de cette agression - auraient brutalement changé de stratégie? Malgré la montée de l'antisémitisme, les directions de ces associations ont appelé leurs membres à la retenue, en particulier depuis ces quatre dernières années. [On n'en a jamais entendu parler. Le rythme des agressions imbéciles est plutôt en hausse. ] Même s'il a pu y avoir des dérapages, ils ont toujours été le fait de membres isolés. [Énorme mensonge. Ces dégonflés n'attaquent qu'en réunion. ] C'est toujours possible mais une opération menée par vingt à trente personnes supposerait une préparation et une concertation à l'intérieur de ces groupes. Quel bénéfice auraient-ils pu retirer d'une telle action? [Ils n'existent que pour ça, la castagne. ]

On ne peut s'empêcher de s'étonner de l'absence de la moindre image des agresseurs dans le film présenté par le site d'Alain Soral. On n'y entend pas plus les slogans "pro-israéliens" relatés par les victimes.

Soral, qui a déclaré avoir reçu des menaces de mort après l'émission de France 2, aurait essuyé un refus de protection de la part des services de police. Dans les premières minutes de la vidéo, il ne montre toutefois aucun signe d'inquiétude et il n'a, manifestement, pas compensé cette lacune par un service d'ordre adéquat.

S'il se sentait menacé, il aurait certainement pu l'obtenir gracieusement de la part des groupuscules qu'il fréquente habituellement. Pourquoi ne l'a-t-il pas fait? Par ailleurs, Benoît Duquesne nous apprend, toujours chez "Le Médiateur", qu'Alain Soral aurait refusé certaines mesures de sécurité proposées par la direction de la librairie.

Conclusion:

Si les déclarations des témoins peuvent se référer à des faits réels, l'identité des auteurs n'est pas pour autant établie, malgré la dénonciation unanime et sans recours.

Les bénéfices de cette nouvelle "affaire", en terme de publicité, pour Alain Soral seront, qu'on le veuille ou non, conséquents, au même titre que celle qui fut faite à son ami humoriste et provocateur.

Les affaires "bidon", qui ont fleuri ces derniers temps, et la facilité apparente avec laquelle on manipule les opinions et les médias doivent nous inciter à la prudence. Jusqu'à preuve du contraire, les accusations visent des individus non identifiés, sur le simple témoignage de personnes dont les sympathies sont clairement affichées.

Contrairement aux médias hyper-réactifs qui ont transmis l'info telle quelle dans les heures qui ont suivi, laissons donc l'enquête suivre son cours.

September 20, 2004 - Last evening news from CTV (Canadian private channel) shows an American tank, that carried at least 12 troops inside, going Baghdad street, CTV camera was following them, suddenly it is hit with some kind of a bomb that instantly explodes the entire tank like a box. You can see parts of tanks flying up in the air and obviosuly 12 soliders inhalited in the air without even finding a piece of their bodies. This horrible show was showed repeatedly in several news buletins. BUT beauty of this live show that ALL OTHER news agencies, including Al-Jazeera, failed to even given news about this clear attack on US invader terrorists. THESE events convince me thet news from Markat-e-Islam reporters are 100% correct and hundreds of attacks were never broadcast on any news media, Zionist or non Zionist are the same. Du coup, cela nous donne plus de distance par rapport à cette question, plus de faculté d’analyse.
